Previously in Robyn Hood: Robyn Hood has a new teacher to help her physical capabilities. While she was strong with her bow, her physical prowess could use some work. After returning home, Robyn confronted her teacher but found that the person training her was a ghost! Now she must figure out what is actually going on.
FATE
Robyn Hood: Shadows of the Past starts with introducing a new character. In the past, Garrett Taft was a Realm Knight about to go on his first mission. He was a little rash and fell into a magic spell circle as he charged forward. He was tortured and turned into a ghost and has opted to train Robyn Hood many years later. Robyn Hood is trying to figure out what is going on and if this spirit is a friend or foe. Ultimately, she decides to follow him to get answers and learns that she is destined to be a child of darkness. However, that darkness has left her body and soul, but the light has not returned yet. Garrett leads her to the Shadowlands to get her light back.
After a few encounters with some of the natives of the Shadowlands, Robyn approaches the castle to find six giants. One of them rises to attack Robyn. Robyn taps into the light to hinder her opponent, but the other giants join the fray. Garrett sees lanterns that have the essence of children in them and begins to return back to life. He helps Robyn escape and can finally pass on to the next realm!
NEW COSTUME!
Robyn Hood: Shadows the Past seems like a culmination of Robyn Hood’s character. In previous comics, she fought this darkness and her magical nature. We now see her use the light in this issue and even get a color change in her costume. Robyn Hood and the art style of Zenescope have constantly been vivid and engaging. Having such eye-catching dynamic poses in the story allows a foundation for the writing to come through. My gripe is that the pacing seems to have been very fast. Zenescope Entertainment appears to be happy with one-shot issues lately. Still, I would have liked an excellent six-issue miniseries to tell this particular story. The creative team had to balance introducing Garrett Taft while setting up the main plotline. Don’t get me wrong, Joe Brusha does that exceptionally well. But I wonder what story could be told if he had more pages to work with.
Regardless, I wonder where we will take the Robyn Hood character here. It feels like a solid ending to Robyn’s character development. I hope we can find an aspect of her story for her to grow in as she takes down the children of darkness.
BOTTOM LINE: GREAT ISSUE
Zenescope Entertainment has been doing exceptionally well with this character. Robyn Hood: Shadows of the Past is no exception, and I wish to get my hands on these titles more often. Solid writing and engaging art nets this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars.
