Previously in Devil’s Reign: Wilson Fisk realized that someone or something had messed with his mind. In retaliation, he has made a law outlawing superheroes. The Avengers nominate Luke Cage to be a political opponent to Fisk. Meanwhile, Fisk uses the Purple Man’s powers to sway the public while also hunting for the Purple Man’s children.
THE TRUTH OF THE DEVIL
Devil’s Reign #4 begins with the city under watch by large masses of drones that patrol the streets. Matt Murdock visits Foggy in the hospital, who was attacked by Fisk’s men. While there, he finds his brother Mike who asks Daredevil for help, but Daredevil sends him away. Elsewhere, the heroes arrested by the Thunderbolts break out of jail.
Meanwhile, Fisk bails his son out of jail, who was arrested by Fisk’s drones, but Butch doesn’t accept Fisk’s generosity. Fisk thus sets his eyes on the Purple Man’s kids and sends the Thunderbolts out to deal with it. Rhino, however, has a change of heart and contacts the Champions because he is not willing to hunt and kill kids.
Fisk has a conversation with his wife and accidentally uses his cane will the Purple Man’s power on her. He then realizes he can use his cane to remember. He heads up the roof, and suddenly he remembers Daredevil’s identity.
FISK’S OBSESSION
I really was enthralled by Wilson Fisk’s character development in Devil’s Reign #4. He has immense control of manipulation, yet he chooses not to control the people he loves, namely his son and wife. Yet this love for his family is balanced by his continual obsession with Daredevil. While this theme has been used repeatedly, I still appreciate the care that Chip Zdarsky has given to this story. Now that he remembers the identity of Daredevil, I wonder if things are going to change. Will he continue his assault on heroes or just focus his attention on Daredevil? Regardless, I think we are seeing the end of Fisk as Mayor of New York and hopefully ushering in Mayor Cage.
I also wanted to take a moment to talk about Rhino. He has such a fantastic character design in this series, and I appreciated his moment of self-reflection. He wanted the lawful job but drew a line in the sand about killing children. It is good to see Rhino continuing his character progression.
BOTTOM LINE: SOLID MIDDLE ISSUE
Since the beginning, I have been following the Devil’s Reign event, and I am enjoying it. This issue feels very street-level, and I enjoy the down-to-earth comic. Devil’s Reign #4 continues on that trend with unique, complicated storylines with solid character moments for many of our heroes and villains. This comic has earned a 4.5 out of 5 stars, and I can’t wait to see the next issue.
