Previously in Elvira Meets Vincent Price: Can the Mistress of the Dark save the world from a pair of ancient gods… armed only with a DVD of an unreleased horror movie from the seventies?
Sure, it sounds crazy when you put it like that…
“I DON’T DO THE RECAPS ANYMORE”
The Book of the End of All Things is in the hands of resurrected Egyptian goddess Amunet, and she has successfully exorcised Vincent from the mortal realm, leaving Elvira alone, at the mercy of her cultists. Fortunately, she has a few tricks up her sleeves (or thereabouts), managing to free her hypnotized writer friend with a powerful kiss. (She did try to slap him first, but it didn’t take.) At the same time, Ahmed returns to his office to find the DVD of Vincent’s lost film, which successfully banished Amunet and her husband Amon-Ra last time. It’s a good thing, too, since the goddess has brought him back and they’re prepared to stream their spell all around the world. If only they had a good Deus Ex Machina waiting in the wings…
THE PRIMORDIAL GODDESS AMUNET
The fun of this series has been in Elvira’s complete unsuitability to be the protagonist of an adventure film, making great use of her angry asides and self-aware humor to amplify the madness around them. That the key to banishing the elder gods is a DVD of an old movie is amusing, and the return of Vincent (that’s not a spoiler, he’s on the cover) is perfectly timed and wonderfully executed. This issue’s art is equally fun, as Samu captures the essence of two real actors as well as strange ram-headed gods, and provides the necessary expression for any Elvira story. The wrap-up of the story is clever, but I have to admit it feels a little bit rushed in the flow of events. The issue ends with Elvira suggesting that she and Vincent open a detective agency, and honestly, Dynamite needs to get on that book right now, as I’ll put it on my pull list immediately.
BOTTOM LINE: I’D LOVE TO SEE THE SEQUEL
There are a few things that feel like pacing missteps, but overall, Elvira Meets Vincent Price #4 is a very effective final chapter, ramping up the camp, bringing in literal deities and having a lot of fun with the ridiculous incongruity of it all, earning a better-than-average 3.5 out of 5 stars overall. If seeing the ghost of Vincent Price fighting a pair of flunkies who are clearly NOT Laurel and Hardy, for legal reasons, while Elvira outsmarts the goddess of night, you owe it to yourself to pick this comic up.
