Previously on Black Cat: Black Cat has been having an exciting solo series this year. She has been on the run from New York Thieves Guild, tried to break into the Sanctum Sanctorum, and even had a date with the Johnny Storm. But to marry her ex boyfriend? That just seems silly.
THE NOBLEST HEIST
This annual begins with Black Cat trying to convince Spider Man to participate in a heist. This heist involves getting married and infiltrating the Maggia’s “Wedding of the Martyrs”. This grim event involves two opposing families getting married and battling to the death. Supposedly, this solves any beef between the two opposing families. As the husband and wife, Peter and Felicia can enter an arena where they fight and this arena is above the Maggia Catacombs.
After defeating the catacomb guardian, Black Cat is able to get a code to a Maggia bank account and the rest of her team is able to steal three million dollars. Our heroes they dress as Hydra agents and use this identity to cover the escape from the wedding. Black Cat decides to give a million dollars to two young lovers who we learn were the bride and groom at the Wedding of the Martyrs and sends them on their way to a happy life. She then swears she will donate the other half of the money to charities based on Spider Man’s request. Unbeknownst to Peter Parker, Black Cat has a million dollars to split with her crew.
TENSION
I have to be honest, I am not a fan of Black Cat as a character but I do love a good heist story. At that is the core of the Black Cat solo title is a group of criminals pulling off cool crimes. As a heist story, this book is fairly interesting and has a layer of complexity that I enjoyed. However, Black Cat and Spider Man as the main protagonist felt a little funky. Often, the story shared awkward moments between the two characters that involved clear sexual energy. While I think it is entertaining to see two exes poke fun at one another, it makes me wonder if Marvel is planning on bringing these two back together.
BOTTOM LINE: FUN
It was a fun and light hearted issue. If you are interested in a good heist that features your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man then this is the story for you. The art was well drawn and complimented the light-hearted writing. While there wasn’t a lot of depth in terms of story themes, it managed to tell an intelligent story involving one was an almost seamless crime. 4 out of 5 stars for Black Cat Annual #1 from me!
