Or – “A Book You Can’t Judge By It’s Cover…” Okay, I’ll say it. The Alex Ross covers for Justice Society have been bad. Really bad. And this month’s is creepy beyond creepy, with Maxine Hunkel looking remarkably like a young Olympia Dukakis, holding down her dress like Marilyn Monroe (showing a pretty adult amount of leg, hip, thigh and an apparent lack of supportive undergarments), with her hair floating up in the air. And while I understand that Alex Ross=Ratings, making the Dale Eaglesham covers (which have all been superior compositions, actually REPRESENTING what’s inside the issue, an archaic…

I don’t know if it is tardiness by writers, artists, or something else all together, but DC is changing the story line up for several Superman titles. Unlike Marvel, who is more than happy to delay issues, DC takes a different approach by changing stories mid-stream. I’m going to call it “Pulling a Wonder Woman”. And hey, what a coincidence, Wonder Woman appears in #661! For those of you who read the Superman title, take the jump to find out what is being replaced and what is being added.

DC Comics has announced the follow up series to 52 – aptly named Countdown, will be another weekly series counting down from 51 to 0, and will serve as the backbone of the DC universe. If you have followed any of the summer events from years past (Crisis comes to mind), Countdown will serve as link to all of the other DCU titles. DC says Countdown will be a stand alone series, and I’m hoping they don’t change their mind requiring readers to buy all of the tie-in issues just to understand the overall story. Countdown will begin the week…

With all the talk of a JLA movie, many are wondering if a Batman and Superman teamup on the silver screen would really work. The answer is YES! And the man to do it is Sandy Collora. This “fan film”/demo reel piece was done by Sandy several years ago, but it still holds up today. I wish Warner had considered both of the actors in this piece for Batman Begins and Superman Returns. Or – “Then The Door Was Opened And The Wind Appeared…” I really meant to pick up this series from issue #1, but I chose not to go in on Wednesday the week that #1 shipped. By the time I arrived for the Friday night closing shift, Mystery Theatre #1 was waaay gone, like a Ginger Baker drum solo in a dusty basement full of beatniks and hipsters. Most interestingly of all, nobody within a thirty minute radius had it either, which means that there’s a lotta love out there for Wesley Dodds. This pleases me, as kids today have…

Or – “Stand By For Matthew ‘Mark-Out’ Moment In Three… Two… One…” I realized something during this issue of USFF that I hadn’t realized before… The structure of this story is very much a classical “rags to riches” tale, with the characters starting at their lowest points (or in some cases, being INTRODUCED at an intentionally low point) and building towards heroism. The thing that masked it from me was, ironically, the one piece of the puzzle that stuck in my craw: Not all the old Fighters were dead. In fact, as I intimated last time, one of them was…

More tales draw to a close We are 41 weeks into DC’s 52, and naturally many of the storylines need to build to a conclusion if we are to get to World War III before May. This week, we get to see more Green Lanterns, see Renee fight a dragon, learn how T.O. Morrow made his escape, and get a brief cameo by one of the big three. I have a much better outlook on 52 this week, and was generally pleased with the results.

Oh man, if a delayed Wonder Woman #5 wasn’t enough, DC Comics has announced the issue will have a brand new story when it hits stores March 14. Here’s how DC Comics describes the issue: Wonder Woman learns that a new women’s movement has begun, inspired by her killing of Max Lord – and leaving Diana torn between the good intentions of the movement and the validation it gives her violent act. Worse yet, she’s ordered to investigate a possible connection between Wonder Woman and this movement by Sarge Steel and the department of Metahuman Affairs! The story is written…

Word this morning from the Hollywood Reporter has Aaron Eckhart in final negotiations to play Gotham District Attorney Harvey Dent in the upcoming The Dark Knight from Warner Bros. Pictures. Eckhart has recently been nominated for a Golden Globe and a Spirit Award, so getting a cushy gig like Harvey Dent is a big win. I was really impressed with how Harvey Dent was portrayed in Batman: The Animated Series in which we got to see the dark side of the district attorney before he had his accident and turned into Two-Face. My hope is Nolan doesn’t try to force…
