If you are like me, you are usually happy to see a new supplement come out for your favorite role playing game, new powers, new options, new directions. But what happens when the new options are strictly better than the ones in the core book?

I used to wake up at 4 am on saturdays to watch cartoons. Not because I liked the very early shows (Seriously, SWATCATS was just not that great), but because my mother didn’t want us to spend all day watching TV. As soon as breakfast was on the table the TV was switched off! Of course, this meant that depending on the complexity of breakfast, I may not get to watch what, at the time, was my favorite cartoon. The freakin’ X-Men!
Do you have what it takes to be God’s Watchdog in the West that never was?
Tabletop role-playing games, as well as LARPs are exercises in social contracts. Whenever a group of people sit down to play they all have to agree on the system, the arbitration of said system and on hundreds of unspoken rules. Of course, in this hodgepodge system there’s always room for someone to start rocking boats, rattling cages and tipping over cows.
Wizards of the Coast has released Images and short descriptions of the 60-card intro decks for Magic 2011. Right of the bat we can see a couple of interesting things. First off, none of the foily rares are reprints, meaning they will be brand new for 2011. Second, three out of the five intro packs feature enemy color combos, could this mean that 2011 is going to have more enemy color support? We’ll just have to wait and see. The plane of Zendikar splits open as the once captive Eldrazi awaken! Can the hearty inhabitants repel such a titanic threat? Probably not.
The year was 1994, The nation struggled to make up its mind about NAFTA, Rock & Roll lost an icon in Kurt Cobain and Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s first black president. And do I remember any of this happening? No. But I remember the Iron Man animated series.
I have always been amazed at how isolated tabletop gaming groups can be. Since I started role playing I have met people who have never played anything other than second edition D&D, likewise I’ve seen groups who play Vampire LARP exclusively. There is very little in the way of a unifying culture for gamers, whereas every sci-fi enthusiast has probably seen an episode of Star Trek there are gamers who have never played a game of Dungeons & Dragons. This, in and of itself, is not an issue, the problem is that, as with all isolated pockets of society, myths…
The Blu-ray edition of Halo Legends arrived at the Major Spoilers doorstep this past weekend, and since resident gamer Rodrigo was hanging around looking for something to do, we had him pop the movie in and file an early, spoiler-free, report.
Ah the year two-thousand and ten! The promise of so many new great things! I for one hope the economy picks up, otherwise I’ll probably have to take a second job in order to afford all the shiny new gaming things coming down this year.
Are you stumped for what you want your next D&D 4e character to be? Wish you could somehow adapt one of your favorite characters to a medieval, high fantasy setting? Look no further, in this series I’ll be taking Frank L. Baum’s beloved characters and turning them into D&D badasses. Oh, and if you missed Dorothy, The Scarecrow and the Tin Woodsman you can still find them in the archives.

When faced with the myriad of possibilities for making a character for a D&D game I very rarely choose to play a ‘divine’ character. Even in previous editions clerics and paladins never really did it for me. There’s something about that straight-up Judeo-Christian, lay-on-hands-smite-the-wicked shtick that seems a little overdone.
