DIGITAL COMICS: Reading list for the week of March 02, 2011

Another week, another round of new comics digital comics released for iPad and Android users.  Take the jump for a rundown of digital comics worth checking out this week.

Day and Date Releases

Batman Beyond volume 4 #3 ($2.99)

I’m really enjoying the heck out of Adam Beechen’s run on Batman Beyond.  This issue continues the Batman/JLU team-up story, as the team takes on the all-new Matter Master.

Captain America and Falcon #1 ($3.99)

Sam Wilson must confront his past to save and old friend’s son who has fallen in with a gang of no-good-niks.  It’s currently available only through the Marvel App store, but if you are a Marvel fan, I’m guessing you’ve been buying a lot of your Marvel titles through that storefront.

Fear Itself Sketchbook (FREE)

Everyone likes free comics, and with Matt Fraction’s Fear Itself getting a lot of attention, downloading this free digital sketchbook by Stuart Immonen is so worth it.  Plus, you’ll want to check out Sin, the daughter of the Red Skull, all grown up.

Formic Wars: Burning Earth #1  and #2 ($3.99 each)

I understand there are a number of people who are Orson Scott Card fans, and Marvel’s take on Formic Wars is probably worth checking out.  It should be noted that the first issue was released in print on February 16, 2011, yet Marvel still thinks the book is deserving of $3.99.  I think this digital comic will test fans of the digital format and fans or Orson Scott Card to see who is really that dedicated.

Issue #2 is indeed a Day and Date release.

Ultimate Comics Captain America #3 ($3.99)

It’s one super soldier against another super solider, as Steve Rogers continues his battle against Ultimate Nuke – the Captain America of the Vietnam War!

World of Warcraft: Curse of the Worgen ($3.99)

While I’m not a fan of the main World of Warcraft series, Curse of the Worgen has captured my attention with this look at the new characters in the MMORPG.

Noteworthy

Brightest Day #9 ($1.99)

This series would probably get a boost if it went Day and Day, but until then, you can catch up on the bi-weekly mega-series that is supposed to answer a lot of questions about the White Lanterns… or not…

Captain America: The First Avenger #3: First Vengeance ($0.99)

The prequel to the upcoming summer movie continues.  It’s written by Fred Van Lente, with art by Neil Edwards, and isn’t too bad.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? ($1.99)

For some reason, this week has seen a lot of discussion and news about the Blade Runner movie.  While it is surprising to me that many of you have not seen this movie (not so surprising when you consider most of you weren’t alive in 1982), BOOM! Studios’ adaptation of the Philip K. Dick tale is still worth checking out.

Kolchak: The Night Stalker: Fever Pitch ($4.99)

If you want to see where X-Files originated, check out Moonstone Books’ Kolchak series.  This 49-page book has Kolchak investigating spontaneous human combustion.

Neil Gaiman and Jim Lee CBLDF – 100 Words ($0.99)

Not many have seen this seven page Comic Book Legal Defense Fund project by Neil Gaiman and Jim Lee, but thanks to ComiXology, DC, and the creators, this 99-cent issue is available to all of us.  Plus, the proceeds go to help the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

Royal Historian of Oz #3 ($0.99)

Slave Labor Graphics caught my attention last year with a new take on the Wizard of Oz mythos.  Tommy Kovac’s future tale of a wannabe Oz Historian gone wrong is very entertaining, and worth checking out if  you support small publishers.  All three issues are 99-cents, so you aren’t going to be out a lot of money if you don’t like the tale being told.

As always, there are hundreds of older issues coming out each week in the digital comics format.  There’s bound to be something for everyone, if you’re willing to search around.
