Previously in Immortal X-Men: After the Hellfire Gala, Exodus, Hope, and Destiny found themselves leading the surviving mutants in the White Hot Room. Here, they found Jean Grey and Mother Righteous. Mother Righteous attacks the mutant refugees and, in the chaos, kidnaps Jean Grey. Meanwhile, Xavier is standing vigil on Krakoa when he realizes that Sinister is still in his mind, wreaking havoc when he sleeps.
Immortal X-Men #18 starts with Elixir healing Destiny, and Destiny reveals where they are and that they must stop Mother Righteous. She, along with Exodus and Hope, fly to chase after her. Mother Righteous, meanwhile, is using Jean Grey to lead her to a place where she can become a Dominion. Meanwhile, Xavier breaks into an Orchis base that housed Sinister’s old lab. With Sinister’s help, they learn all the different variations of Sinister that manage to unlock Dominion.
Mother Righteous’s magic is based on stories, favors, and praise. She stabs Jean Grey to write a story in her blood, a story where she becomes a Dominion. However, she messes up and realizes she didn’t awaken Dominion but the original Nathaniel Essex.
I enjoyed reading Immortal X-Men #18 from Mother Righteous’s perspective, and I like the parallel journey between her and the other Sinister clones. But as I read, I noticed how complicated this plot is. To prepare for this review, I tried explaining this narrative to my wife, who isn’t following X-Men. Watching her trying to process the Fall of X storyline and the Sinister clones started off well, but quickly, she lost focus. Even though I read the Sins of Sinister storyline a while ago, I didn’t remember the finer details. These X-Men storylines require you to remember too much to understand what is happening. Even if I took just the Immortal X-Men title, it would be impossible to process if you haven’t kept up with most of the events that have happened, which I think is a disservice to the reader.
Despite that, I liked the writing and the ideas. But it is a pain to try to explain and difficult to understand. The art is fantastic, and the details are extraordinary, but there is so much text on the page that I don’t think this will be friendly for most readers. However, for me, who has a job to read comics, I enjoyed this.
I think the Fall of X storyline is fascinating, and I am excited to see the shift from the Krakoa era to whatever comes next. But I would also like to see a return to the simplicity of ideas because incorporating all the plot points in this comic is overwhelming. I give 3.5 out of 5 stars for Immortal X-Men #18.
