In My Little Pony #14, Izzy Moonbow meets up with Violette, a young filly who attended one of her crafting classes in Bridlewood Forest. However, Violette looks a bit different, with splotches of white in her dark fur. Unfortunately, she becomes the target of bullies in Maretime Bay who blame her for accidents and label her as bad luck. When Izzy accidentally starts a fire at Pipp’s hair salon, Violette is again wrongly accused. Feeling overwhelmed, she runs away and encounters Mariama and Skye, two Zebras. They offer her a potion that promises to make her look normal if she takes two sips. Violette takes more than two, and her patterns constantly change shapes as she returns to the salon.
After reuniting with Izzy, Violette realizes it’s okay to be different. Skye provides her with a potion to revert to her original appearance before she drank the initial potion. Embracing her uniqueness, Violette learns that being different isn’t something to be ashamed of.
This is the moment I revisit My Little Pony with my daughter. I should probably pay her for her input because much of this review is seen through her eyes. As I explained the themes of My Little Pony #14 to her, I could see her processing the ideas in her young mind. However, she struggled to grasp why Violette was being bullied. Since she’s only in preschool and hasn’t encountered such intense bullying, having a story like this helps us explore life in a way that’s easier for her to understand.
I didn’t feel deeply engaged with the story as an adult reader. The plot seemed a bit disjointed as we jumped between different locations. The book relies heavily on the familiarity of the characters from previous issues or television series. That being said, it’s important to remember that the target audience consists of fans already familiar with the franchise. The artwork, designed for a younger audience, is simple and easy to follow, although it didn’t captivate me. However, my daughter seemed to enjoy the overall story.
My Little Pony #14 is a great comic for its intended audience and conveys a valuable lesson. I’m excited to continue sharing these moments with my daughter and exploring the world of art and comics together. I would rate this issue 3.5 out of 5 stars.
