Previously in High Republic Adventures: Sav was discontent with Jedi life and would often sneak out of the Jedi temple to visit a nearby bar. One day, she encounters the great pirate Maz Kanata and joins her ship. During an encounter with Arkik, Sav had to use force to save the crew but revealed her deception. Now the pirate crew attempt to recover the Venomed Scabbard, their stolen pirate ship.

MAY THE FORCE BE THE FORCE

Star Wars: The High Republic Adventure #3 starts with Sav convincing her master that she is undercover and needs to be away. When the Jedi Master was unconvinced, she faked a connection issue and hung up. Soon, we learn about the Scarlet Skulls, a cult that tattoos their face, cuts out their tongue, and murder people. Crewmate Alak reveals that he used to be a Scarlet Skull. Before his initiation ritual, he ran away to get stronger. Eight years later, he returned to destroy the cult and save a young baby, Shan. Both Alak and Quiet Shan made it onto Maz’s pirate crew.

Meanwhile, the pirate crew tracks Arkik to a hidden depot and talks to Frander. The conversation gets heated before Sav stops the conversation. Sav pretends she is part of the Dank Graks while Maz Kanata steals back her ship. Maz is caught, and chaos ensues. The rest of the crew heads back to their ship while Sav continues her infiltration of the Dank Graks to save Maz.

SOLID CHARACTERS

I appreciated the pacing of Star Wars: The High Republic Adventure #3. This is a massive cast of characters, and spending a few pages exploring two helped provide a ton. When the action sequences started, I could focus on Alak and Shan instead of being lost in the sea of aliens and combat. And that is what this issue does well; a ton of characterization happens for a few characters, which made me more invested in the conflict and plot. For me, this makes this one of the better Star Wars comics that are being written and produced right now. It helps that there isn’t much literature about these characters, so the barrier to entry is a lot less than, say, a Yoda comic.

With that being said, the character designs are still exceptional, and the artist and colorist do outstanding work. However, I found myself getting a little overwhelmed visually when the action started going on. And I realized that this is because I don’t have a clear understanding of the ship designs. Being more of a fantasy reader, ships never strike me as something I need to pay special attention to. But I think that is more on me than anything else.

BOTTOM LINE: EXCELLENT READ

Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures #3 is an excellent comic that keeps me on the edge of my seat. This series is an ideal starting point for the broader Star Wars universe. This is a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars and a high recommendation from me.
