Previously in Planet Hulk: Hulk became the leader of Sakaar and was known as the Green Scar and the Worldbreaker. Millenium later, Grand Priestess Venkiera wants to eliminate the Haarg, the green-skinned residents of Sakaar. Talo has recruited Amadeus Cho, Korg, and She-Hulk to help rescue her brother and save the Haarg. But after that mission, She-Hulk was captured, and her gamma energy was used for a weapon!
Planet Hulk: Worldbreaker #4 portrays the beginning of the end for Sakaar. Venkiera sets off earthquakes to rupture Sakaar while Bruce Banner grieves for his lost wife. Amadeus Cho requests that Banner not get involved in the conflict, fearing his capture would power the proper destruction of the planet. Amadeus then rescues Jen while the Grand Priestess escapes. With She-Hulk weak, the Hulks and Haarg try to save anyone they can. Amadeus Cho hooks himself up to the floating city to be used as a battery to help people escape.
Before Amadeus destroys his body, they find Bruce Banner. Banner finally decides to join the fight, grabbing his old sword and armor and becoming the terror he once was.
The pacing of Planet Hulk: Worldbreaker #4 felt rushed. I struggled to keep up with the sequences of saving She-Hulk, saving the people, powering the floating city, and trying to manage all the conversational points. In fact, this issue design seems to be strictly to get us to the next issue’s climax of the narrative arc. There wasn’t a solid balance between these plot points and letting the characters react. In writing, I often teach a technique called Scene and Sequel. After a scene, the characters and the reader need time to respond. Unfortunately, I did not feel I had time to react to everything happening. Because of that, I couldn’t get behind Hulk joining the fight. That moment should have been exciting, but I felt it was another plot point in the plethora of plot points.
The story that the creative team is trying to tell needs more than five issues. The art and writing have so much potential, but everything feels rushed. I think the pacing would feel better if we had one more issue. Planet Hulk: Worldbreaker #4 is 3 out of 5 stars.
