Previously in Trve Kvlt: Marty is a worker at Burger Lord who has had enough. During rush hour, he robbed eight shops and stole a package. However, Marty was caught by the Cult of the Immortal Heartbeat. He was tasked with killing Doctor Shiver with an ancient weapon. Working with the new hire, Alison, they have finally made it to Doctor Shiver’s quarters. Meanwhile, Bernice questioned Veronika about the location of Marty!
DIVINE INTERVENTION
Trve Kvlt #4 starts with Marty and Alison deceiving the guards who protect Doctor Shiver. Marty unleashes the weapon, but it isn’t what he was expecting. Instead, Doctor Shiver takes this weapon and reveals it to be Satan himself. Doctor Shiver thought he would be rewarded but was killed and incinerated. While this is happening, Bernice and Veronika head to the temple while talking about the nuance of worshipping Satan.
Marty is in a pinch. He cannot convince Satan to spare him but notices a window in this underground room. Without many options, he and Alison quickly jump out of the window!
DON’T BE SUSPICIOUS
The best part of Trve Kvlt #4 is its blatant satire and commentary on multiple significant topics. There is a corporation vibe with the inclusion of Burger Lord, and then we are targeting religion a bit too. At times, Bernice straight-up laughed at Veronika. As an English educator, I understand that humor and satire were used by philosophers to take away power from influential figures. When you can laugh at a complex subject or idea, you take away its effectiveness and open up conversations. Watching Alison and Marty portray this comic relief against Satan is fascinating to read and analyze. Great ideas here by the co-creators.
The art features very dynamic colors to portray a sense of danger to the characters. The art uses a more straightforward style that allows a vivid change of hot and cold contours. While it isn’t my favorite aesthetic style, it is done exceptionally well, and I respect the choice.
BOTTOM LINE: GREAT COMIC
I enjoyed getting to know Marty as a character and want to know more about how he survives Satan. The ideas are complex but presented in an easy-to-understand way. Hopefully, we will see the next series start soon! Trve Kvlt #4 is a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars and a high recommendation from me.
