Black Cotton #2 (of 6) Review

Christopher RondeauBy Christopher RondeauMay 13, 20213 Mins Read

A black cop shot an unarmed white woman, causing a stir for the Cotton family. Check out this odd twist of reality in Black Cotton #2 by Scout Comics!

Black Cotton #2 ReviewBLACK COTTON #2 (OF 6)

Writer: Patrick Foreman and Brian Hawkins
    Artist: Marco Perugini
    Letterer: Francisco Zamora
    Editor: Andrea Lorenza Molinari
    Publisher: Scout Comics
    Cover Price: $3.99
    Release Date: May 12th, 2021

Previously in Black Cotton: Zion Cotton has shot an unarmed white woman that has caused an outcry for justice. Zion’s wealthy family tries to figure out how to deal with the social backlash while the victim, Elizabeth Nightingale, struggles with what happened to her.

    CONSEQUENCES

The issue opens with Elizabeth remembering the fear of her being shot while her family figures out what kind of legal recourse she can take. She is clearly distraught as her family talks with a lawyer. Meanwhile, Zion is trying to let off steam by going to a boxing ring and taking out his anger on a sparring partner. The Cotton family attempts to try and get dirt on Elizabeth to justify Zion’s actions but Xavier cotton, Zion’s brother, joins a group of people to do something about the racial injustice. Zion, after returning home, decides to go for a walk and heads to the hospital that Elizabeth is staying at.

    CHALLENGING READ

This issue is a parallel to current events in the United States. Which makes this issue a difficult read because of how realistic it is. I am Asian-American and white, and I get such a small piece of this injustice that is incomparable to the events of the comic and the events of real life. Even as I write the review, I find it hard to add meaningful commentary because the point the creative team are trying to make is painfully obvious. There is a real discrepancy between the majority and the minority in the United States that is saddening to observe. And reading it in a comic isn’t any easier. Great work by the creative team taking on such an important topic.

    BOTTOM LINE: CONCEPTUALLY INTELLIGENT

Black Cotton is an excellent premise to really drive home a point. The use of black and white art is an intelligent addition to the story they are telling. I don’t know how this story will end and my imagination is running wild. This is a 4.5 out of 5 from me but I admit this comic is hard to rate. Regardless, I think this is a must read trade when it comes out.
