My Top 5 Death Scenes are:
1) Rocky’s trainer Mickey in Rocky III
2) Bruce Wayne’s parents in Batman ’89
3) Apollo Creed in Rocky IV
4) Louis Lane in Superman ’78
5) Slim Pickens in Dr. Strangelove
Here are mine:
– Optimus Prime in Transformers the movie
– Ogami Itto in Lone Wolf & Cub
– Sniper Wolf in Metal Gear Solid
– Lord Washizu in Throne Of Blood
– Darth Vader in Return of The Jedi
Optimus Prime is a good one. that screwed me up so much as a 4 or 5 year old that i ran out of the living room crying hysterically at like 8am on a saturday and jumped in bed with my still-sleeping parents, who had no idea why i was so wound up.
my deaths may run a little more recent. and also, spoilers, obviously.
5) Josh Hartnett’s deputy partner guy who gets axed toward the end of 30 Days of Night. maybe one of the gnarliest beheadings i’ve ever seen in a movie.
4) Trevalyan’s satellite dish through the eye in Goldeneye. i grew up in the lackluster Brosnan era, but that was such an overkill death that i still love it.
3) Spock in Wrath of Khan. i mean….come on.
2) Marko in the most recent volume of Saga. a very new addition, but maybe one of the most poignant i’ve read in the past few years. i need to call my parents.
1) maybe this is a copout, but the erasure of the last/first memory of Joel and Clementine meeting towards the end of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. maybe not a death of a specific character, but the death/erasure of a relationship/love/significant portion of your life is incredibly frightening and sad. you keep going, but all memory, both good and bad, of a relationship just goes away without your ever recalling they were there.
Oooo I love the mention of Eternal Sunshine, that’s a good one!!!
My Top 5 Death Scenes
Professor Screw Eyes – We’re Back
Deactivating Hal 9000 – 2001: A Space Odyssey
Glen – The Walking Dead Comic – This messed me up for a LONG time.
Ellie Fredricksen – Intro to Up
Roland’s Unwinding – Unwind by Neil Shusterman
Special Mention Legolas Shooting the Elephant – Return of the King
I’m several weeks behind in my listening, but I do feel the need to respond to Matthew, who said that I would tell everyone exactly how many times the movie Heavy Metal has been mentioned on the podcast. Interestingly, it’s not as many as I would have thought. The movie has been in seven of the 215 extant episodes of Top Five (including this one). They are as follows:
4) Guilty Pleasure Movies (listed as an also-ran, not an actual top five item)
8) Fictional Villains (the Loc-Nar is an also-ran)
67) Road Trip Songs lists “Radar Love” by Golden Earring
69) Movies from the 80s (another also-ran)
73) Movie Soundtracks
129) Movies We’ve Seen Again and Again
