IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
A-FORCE #3
Writer: Kelly Thompson, G. Willow Wilson
Artist: Jorge Molina
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: • As Antimatter grows increasingly dangerous, SHE-HULK, CAPTAIN MARVEL, MEDUSA, DAZZLER and NICO MINORU must put aside their differences and learn to become a real team – the team Singularity knows they can be – before it’s too late.
• When a desperate battle in space with Antimatter goes awry it may be the death of one of them, just as this new team is beginning to find its way.
• Meanwhile Tempest Bell’s analysis of Antimatter may not bode well for the future of A-Force.
MATTHEW: Still a great read, featuring a slowly growing cast of fun characters, including a new weird glam-punk Dazzler. Read it, seriously…
ROB: A-Force has been a surprise for me from the get-go. Singularity is an interesting hold-over from the Secret Wars and a fun character to get. The team coming together is such a diverse group that I’m ready to see more of them in action.
BLACK WIDOW #1
Writer: Chris Samnee, Mark Waid
Artist: Chris Samnee
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Eisner Award-winning team of Mark Waid and Chris Samnee are taking Black Widow on the lam! Natasha has spent years gathering secrets, and when some of the darkest ones begin mysteriously going public, no one is safe. With her betrayed former confederates at S.H.I.E.L.D. on her heels and a lifetime of training and ingenuity at her disposal, Natasha’s out for answers in a knock-down-drag-out tale of action and espionage! Hidden enemies, old friends and unusual allies collide, and all eyes are on Black Widow. The chase is on!
MATTHEW: I had some real issues with her last solo book, so I’m happy to see a creative team this good taking over the reins on Natalia’s ongoing adventures. Really looking forward to this one…
STEPHEN: You had me at Samnee and Waid. There is no doubt this is going to be a fantastic read. PICK IT UP! PICK IT UP TODAY!
THE DISCIPLINE #1
Writer: Peter Milligan
Artist: Leandro Fernandez
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Between fighting her sister and hating her husband, Melissa still finds time to fall in lust with a stranger who’s an awful lot more than he seems. What appears to be a simple seduction is revealed as something much darker and more dangerous. This controversial and erotically-charged tale of sex, death, and metamorphosis begins with an explosion of carnality and weirdness.
MATTHEW: I have some SERIOUS reservations about whether this title will work, but Milligan’s writing is always engaging, even when it makes my skin crawl, and that cover image is too evocative not to want to flip through. Here’s hoping it’s as good as the premise and creators make me hope it is…
SPIDER-MAN #2
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Sara Pichelli
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Avengers are down and Miles Morales stands alone against a villain with the power to destroy the universe. More importantly, his grades are in the toilet.
ROB: Miles solo entrance into the Marvel proper has been good so far, and with Bendis and Pichelli bring him into the fold, I imagine it will remain that way for some time to come. Besides, it’s good to see high-school Spidey again without having to regress Peter.
STEPHEN: It’s been too long since I’ve picked up Spider-Man. I’ll be honest, I miss Miles Morales under the care of Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli. Time to fix that this week by picking up this booK!
THOMAS: My pull list is a bit light this week, but at the top of the pile will be the next adventure of Miles Morales. There are many reasons this character has become such a darling of the people, not the least of which is the fact that Miles is accessible and familiar, yet still fresh and exciting.
UNCANNY AVENGERS #6
Writer: Gerry Duggan
Artist: Carlos Pacheco
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Deadpool and Quicksilver take a break from the Uncanny Avengers’ secret mission to help the NYPD out of a jam. And after the tragic events in Boston, the Inhumans have a serious beef with the newest Avenger, Synapse. Plus: The odd and tragic fate of the Avengers Mansion is revealed!
ROB: Deadpool as an Avenger has gone about as I expected, and it’s been great. Seeing Quicksilver put up with him should be a delight this issue.
