IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY!
Major Spoilers runs down the comics we are looking forward to, and recommending, this week.
AMI-COMI GIRLS #8
Writers: Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti
Artists: Adam Archer and Steven Cummings
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Three new Ame-Comi Girls go on three separate solo missions to wrap up the series. Big Barda provokes a head-to-head confrontation with Darkseid, White Canary evens the odds in Vegas, and Mera defends Seattle from an attack by her evil half-sister, Black Manta.
RODRIGO: Oh, Ame-Comi girls, so conflicting. On the one hand a universe where 100% of heroes are women, on the other, a universe where 100% of women dress like strippers.
BATMAN VOL. 3: DEATH OF THE FAMILY
Writers: Scott Snyder and James T Tynion IV
Artists: Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion, Jock
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $24.99
SOLICITATION: After having his face sliced off, The Joker makes his horrifying return to Gotham City in this epic from issues #13-17 that shook Batman to his core! But even for a man who’s committed a lifetime of murder, he’s more dangerous than ever before. How can Batman protect his city and those he’s closest to?
This new hardcover features an acetate dust jacket showcasing the face of The Joker as it appeared on the die-cut covers of the “Death of the Family” comics — and under that dust jacket lies the horror that is The Joker’s skinless skull!
RODRIGO: I hope they eventually run through all the prepositions. Death AT the family, death UNDER the family…
BRAIN BOY #2
Writer: Fred Van Lente
Artist: R. B. Silva, Rob Lean
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Ambushed while protecting an important foreign dignitary, Matt Price, a.k.a. Brain Boy, finds himself wrapped up in political intrigue when an assassination plot that could derail a key United Nations conference sets Brain Boy on a collision course with a man whose mental powers rival his own! Get ready for a psychic smackdown over the streets of New York City!
MATTHEW: Am I a sucker for a Silver Age book? Sure, but this one kicked off pretty impressively, and Van Lente is an excellent writer responsible for some killer concepts in the past… Check it out, seriously.
FOREVER EVIL ROGUES REBELLION #1
Writer: Brian Buccellato
Artist: Patrick Zircher
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: The Rogues call no man boss, but a new evil threat might not leave them much choice! Will they fall in line, or refuse and risk certain death? The answer will tear the Rogues apart!
ROB: Sometimes I wonder if the Rogues may be the only characters I ever really care about in the DCU. Certainly they rank up there as some of the more interesting and this is the only Forever Evil tie-in that I’m really getting behind, so maybe they are.
HAWKEYE #13
Writer: Matt Fraction
Artist: David Aja
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Fraction and Aja continue the surprise comic hit of the century! After a lifetime of decisions both good and bad, Clint and Barney Barton have to realize they are brothers and ultimately, they’re the only ones who can save one another. I mean if they don’t kill each other first. Good luck with that, Barton brothers.
MATTHEW: Seems like forever since the last issue of Hawkeye, but that hasn’t dimmed my expectations. With Clint’s brother Barney back in the fold, there’s even more potential for disaster, which makes for some fascinating storytelling. Also, WHEN WILL KATE COME BACK?
ROB: So the book now has three different Hawkeyes, the classic, the Dark, and the Young. I still don’t know how this title became one of the best Marvel has to offer, but I’m happily reading every last bit.
STEPHEN: Been a while since I’ve had a chance to check in on the adventures of Hawkguy, ya’ know? And with the way my week has been shaping up, I’m really in need of a good story, good art, and good characters.
INVINCIBLE #106
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Ryan Ottley
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $2.99
SOLICITATION: Who’s stronger?
MATTHEW: I’m gonna be honest here: Invincible has not been on it’s best behavior over the last few issues. As the schedule has slipped, so has the can’t-miss storytelling I remember from the best of the book. Still, I’m interested in seeing where this all goes, and whether or not it will disappoint me as much as The Walking Dead has. Fingers crossed!
SHOOT FIRST #1
Writer: justin Aclin
Artist: Nicolas Daniel Selma
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Secular Humanist Occult Obliteration Taskforce—defending humanity from angels, demons, and a bunch of other crap S.H.O.O.T. doesn’t believe in.
Justin Aclin (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Twisted ToyFare Theatre) and Nicolás Daniel Selma (Tomb Raider: The Beginning) take aim at the supernatural in an all-new big-action, big-ideas sci-fi adventure!
RODRIGO: Wow, a comic in which secular humanists destroy religious icons. Subtle.
SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #19
Writer: Dan Slott
Artist: Ryan Stegman
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Necessary Evil CONCLUDES! The moment that changes world of Spider-Man– and the Marvel Universe for years to come. Which Spider-Man is responsible for such a thing? Spider-Man 2099 or the Superior Spider-Man? Major developments for both Spider-Man’s cast… and for the future.
ROB: So this has been hailed as a huge changing point for the Superior Spider-Man, and I can’t wait to see what that is. Slott isn’t one to oversell his work, so I expect this to be an actual game changer.
