Since original Obi-Wan Sir Alec Guinness is no longer with us, the though of Obi-Wan as a force ghost in Star Wars Episode VII was lost. However, Latino Review is confirming that Ewan McGregor will be returning to the roll of Obi-Wan as the force ghost, along side a ghost of Emperor Palpatine. We’re still unsure how much he will be made up to resemble Guinness, if at all, as of yet. On top of this, McGregor is wanting to do a solo movie focusing on Obi-Wan Kenobi at some point.

It wouldn’t be too far fetched for the image of his Force ghost to have altered to his younger self. I’m almost certain there has been EU material where a Force manifestation has altered appearance, although not quite in the same way. For all we know, he only appeared as “old” Ben Kenobi to Luke simply so Luke would recognize him easier at the time.
As Ewan McGregor’s performance as Obi Wan is one of the very few things I actually enjoyed about Episodes I-III, I have no problem with this at all. It would make sense to me that how someone appears as a force ghost would be subjective, since you’re not really seeing that person with your eyes but with your mind.
Palpatine on the other hand, I can probably do without. Plus it seems to me that becoming one with the force to the point where you can manifest as a ghost is incompatible with the idea of the dark side of the force.

In the EU, plenty of Sith have found ways to cheat death in a similar manner to becoming a Force ghost, either by design or by accident, so it may be possible Palpatine didn’t become a Force ghost on purpose. He may not even be a Force ghost like Obi-Wan at all, merely an echo of Palpatine and his strong ties to the Dark Side.
But I would think merging with the Dark Side in an effort to cheat death does sound like a very Sith thing to do.

And no, I don’t want to explain why, because doing so almost invariably starts a flame war. To be clear it’s not something specific to Star Wars EU, just expanded content in general.
Anyway, getting absorbed by the force–painfully and against your will–sounds more in-character with the dark side to me. An agonized, unending ghostly existence for Palpatine sounds kind of cool, now that I think about it. If that’s where they’re going with it I’d be okay with that.

I only brought it up since many bits of the EU have been absorbed into movie canon in the past (in the prequels, special editions and other material Lucasfilm considers to be movie canon) and it wouldn’t surprise me if they did it again. Doesn’t mean it will happen that way, just that they have several possible explanations available and it wouldn’t be close to the first time they’ve taken an idea from the EU and moved it up to movie canon status.

I don’t see why they couldn’t but Alec Guiness into the film. After all, they put Peter Cushing into the new trilogy long after he was dead, Marlin Brando played Jor El after he had kicked the bucket, and a few years back, they filmed a beer commercial with John Wayne in it, and he’d been dead for at least twenty years by that time. Sure, it would be sacreligous if they did it, but, heck, I know plenty of people who consider the entire second Star War trilogy to be an offense against the laws of Man and God, to quote Richard Daystrum.
