This week, on the Major Spoilers Podcast, the gang takes a gander at Bill Willingham’s Fables: Legends in Exile.
Fables Volume 01: Legends in Exile
Writer: Bill Willingham
Artist: Lan MedinaWhen a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters have created their own peaceful and secret society within an exclusive luxury apartment building called Fabletown. But when Snow White’s party-girl sister, Rose Red, is apparently murdered, it is up to Fabletown’s sheriff, a reformed and pardoned Big Bad Wolf, to determine if the killer is Bluebeard, Rose’s ex-lover and notorious wife killer, or Jack, her current live-in boyfriend and former beanstalk-climber.

you should have gone with the hardcover. 10 issues of pure awesomeness
What a happy coincidence, I just picked this up last Friday.
I’m not through it completely but as of right now I’m on chapter 3. So far I’m intrigued as to where this is going. I always enjoy a good detective story, and that aspect of the story feels really well done. But, at this point, I have to say I’m not a fan of the characters themselves. Nothing about them in this book makes them seem like the fables they used to be. The characters all seem like standard run of the mill characters with names like Bigsby, Snow White and Jack applied to them. I just don’t see the whole “Fables in New York thing.” they just feel like normal people. Which is disappointing to me.
I’m going to finish it up just to see the outcome and maybe pick up the 2nd trade as well. But if they don’t start playing up the actual fable aspect I’m going to lose interest quickly.
This Trade is the weakest trade of the series, it really is just a setting up of who is who in this universe. If you are on the fence, read trade 2 Animal Farm. This is the trade that really hooked me to own every trade sense. The first trade doesn’t do the series the brilliance and justice it deserves.
.I picked this book up on a whim at the same time I picked up Irredeemable vol 1. I enjoyed the story and have recommended it many times. I am curious if the detective element continues or if this was it. I haven’t been able to check out vol. 2 yet
