Blue Falcon and Dyno-Mutt #1 Review

Stronger than a train, with a so-so brain, and he’s back, with his Blue Buddy in tow! Your Major Spoilers review of Blue Falcon and Dyno-Mutt #1 from Dynamite Entertainment awaits!

Previously in Blue Falcon and Dyno-Mutt: Secure in their luxurious penthouse high above the downtown streets, wealthy inventor and art collector Radley Crown and his faithful canine companion enjoyed a charmed existence – until the fateful day a vicious gang of thugs shattered his complacency. In the aftermath of the vicious attack, Crown focused his incredible technical skills to rebuild both himself and his four-legged companion into the ultimate instruments of retribution: The Blue Falcon and Dynomutt, Dog Wonder!

    “YOU SHOT MY DOG!”

Blue Falcon and Dyno-Mutt #1 begins with the Blue Falcon facing down an army of bird-men, Dark Knight Returns-style, and slowly being overwhelmed by his lethal enemies. As Blue Falcons collapses, unable to fight any longer, but before the final blow can strike, he awakens in his bed, as an ordinary citizen/rich-idiot-with-no-day-job Radley Crown. Radley shares his nightmare with his constant companion, Dyno, who seems to be some sort of greyhound, and then greets his new lady friend before setting off to work.

Later that day, at his secret base, Radley greets his science maven, a man named Rudy, who has completed a certain “module” that they’ve been working on. As Crown thanks him, he also explains that he’s tripling his pay and making sure to cut Rudy in for 20% of all profits once they monetize his newest masterstroke. It’s a big deal for Rudy, who didn’t think that his new boss cared.

It’s just a shame Rudy already collaborated with a group of masked criminals to let them into Crown Tower for nefarious purposes.

THE ORIGIN OF THE DOG WONDER

As with other origins of the Blue Falcon and Dyno-Mutt team, we have come to the place where we have to justify using such extensive robot prostheses on a “mere dog.” This one isn’t quite as traumatic as the 2018 Super Sons/Dynomutt Special, but it’s still tough to see Dyno shot by thugs with an unknown agenda. The art in this issue is also more to my liking than the previous take, even avoiding what I think of as the Dynamite Comics “style.” The brief scene of Blue Falcon testing his new flight/glider apparatus is lovely work, as is the bait-and-switch grimdark nightmare opening sequence. The biggest concern I had about the issue was its pacing, as the script doesn’t quite feel like a first issue to me. I don’t think I missed any previous Blue Falcon appearances, but this issue begins with him active as a vigilante without the help of his canine compatriot.

    BOTTOM LINE: AN INTERESTING START

When it comes to a first issue that’s not quite a first issue, Blue Falcon and Dynomutt #1 is an example that makes for an entertaining read, and one that has convinced me to collect the entire miniseries, so long as we don’t end up in the territory of bloodthirsty nonsense again, earning 3.5 out of 5 stars overall. If you’ve never heard of Blue Falcon and had never seen an episode of his cartoon (which is, honestly, pretty likely in 2025), I think this book will work for you as well as it did for me, a Gen Xer who grew up with Gary Owens and Frank Welker voicing them.

    Blue Falcon: Year One

The story of Dyno-Mutt starts before there even was one, and this issue does good work in putting it all together.

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.
