Previously in Cheetah and Cheshire Rob The Justice League: Between raising a teenager, an insatiable hunger, and being consistent members of the b-level villain squad, Cheetah and Cheshire have their fair share of problems.  But a big score could change all of that for them, forever.

    THE SCORE

Cheetah and Cheshire Rob The Justice League #1 starts off with Barbara Ann, AKA Cheetah, visiting a medical facility for an evening meal.  As she leaves, she realizes she’s still hungry, and before she takes her hunger out on a passerby, she vows to solve the hunger.  Elsewhere, Cheshire is in a lab testing out a new compound on a test rat, which leads to the animal exploding completely.  Later that night, Cheshire breaks into a place full of guards.  After taking them out, she finds her original target already subdued by Cheetah.  After using her new compound on him, the two go out for breakfast.  Here, Cheetah brings up her plan to rob The Watchtower, much to Cheshire’s dismay.  After a lot of convincing, Cheshire starts to come around on the plot.

SLOW MOVING WITH COMPETENT AND EFFECTIVE CHARACTER BUILDING

So, just to clear things up, in no way is this an introduction to the characters of Cheetah and Cheshire. For better or worse, this book does operate on the premise that you’ll have at least some passing knowledge of these two characters.  This is an odd choice considering one of the themes of the book is a desire to move up in prominence in-universe.  So, on one hand, the book acknowledges that these characters aren’t household names, but on the other hand, it doesn’t do much to make up for that.  What it does really well, though, is establish these two characters as people.  With the exception of a brief fight scene, most of this issue is an extended conversation between Cheshire and Cheetah and while this isn’t the most pulse-pounding action, it’s engaging, and that’s because it’s written as two people who understand each other and actually care for each other in a colleague sort of way.  The problem is that while this conversation is interesting and well done, it would’ve been only a 5-minute scene in the type of heist movie this comic appears to be taking inspiration from.

ENJOYING THE OUT OF COSTUME LOOKS

Both Cheshire and Cheetah have nice designs in general, but here it’s when they’re out of their “supervillain” getups that they stand out the most.  Barbara Ann’s trench coat hoodie thing looks really cool, and it pairs well with Cheshire’s varsity jacket look.  These are fashionable women, and it adds some more depth to their characters, which is important considering they’re going to be the focal point for six issues.   Other than that, the visuals still look good; it’s no secret that Nicola Scott has a real talent for faces, and that’s very evident in this issue.  Especially with the focus of the issue being a conversation, the fact that each panel has a different expression really helps this section feel engaging.

BOTTOM LINE:  A SOLID INTRODUCTION TO THE LEADS’ DYNAMIC THAT’S IN NO RUSH

For a comic called Cheetah And Cheshire Rob The Justice League #1, this issue is unsurprisingly all about Cheetah and Cheshire.  Specifically, how they interact with each other and what sort of relationship they have.  What this issue doesn’t have a lot of is the whole “Rob The Justice League” part of the equation.  Of course, this is the first issue, but there is a surprisingly small amount of time given to the actual plot that this title is centered around.  4 out of 5 stars.

    A Focused and Patient Comic

Cheetah and Cheshire Rob The Justice League #1 isn’t sprinting anywhere. Perhaps with the title sort of spelling it all out, it doesn’t need to. Instead, we get an engaging focus on the two leads and the nature of their interactions which does a lot of work creating some depth for these two.

At a young age, Jonathan was dragged to a small town in Wisconsin. A small town in Wisconsin that just so happened to have a comic book shop. Faced with a decision to either spend the humid summers and bitter winters traipsing through the pine trees or in climate controlled comfort with tales of adventure, horror, and romance, he chose the latter. Jonathan can often be found playing video games, board games, reading comics and wincing as his “to watch” list grows wildly out of control.
