Previously in Deadpool and Wolverine: The most mismatched team-up returns. Wolverine is a mutant with regeneration and enhanced senses. Weapon X bonded adamantium to his skeleton, giving him durability and adamantium claws. Wade Wilson was dying of cancer and went to Weapon X to give him a second chance at life. He received a healing factor that kept him alive but heavily scarred.
Deadpool and Wolverine: WWIII #1 starts with Wolverine flying into Vancouver to help out an old friend. He is hunting a powered individual, Wildside, who is already fighting Deadpool. Wolverine and Deadpool team up to take him down and end up slicing him up. Wolverine heads to Deadpool’s rental and finds a burner phone in Russia. With the help of Forge, he finds a plane ticket under “Sonia W. Lewd,” an anagram for Wade Wilson. With that, he finds a hotel rental under “Ernie Wolv.” When he enters the hotel room, it is filled with Deadpool-related furniture, but he is suddenly attacked by many enhanced humans. He kills them all. From there, he gets a lead to a club, where Deadpool is wearing a weird helmet and starts to fight Wolverine for an audience!
A lot of Deadpool and Wolverine: WWIII #1 is an exposition into an inciting incident. Despite that, I really don’t have a clean understanding of what is going on. There are some funny things like the book title WWIII is not World War III but instead Wade Wilson the Third, but beyond that, it is just a bloody action book so far. I didn’t see much character development or tension; I just spent time noticing the small things to keep up my interest. Details like Deadpool wearing an Illuminati belt at the club. I couldn’t attach myself to the narrative story even with those engaging tidbits within the art. We are setting up a couple of big reveals soon, but this particular issue did not hook me in. I will say that Wolverine has a lot of inner monologues, but it feels like standard Wolverine commentary and nothing new.
The use of color makes the issue great, though. I really liked the painting of the sky in Russia or the glasses of some of the characters. That starkly contrasted the purple weapons or the blood in the action scene. Great work here.
In my head, I like these two characters separately, so I often think that coming together will tell a unique story. But it is a story where they overly depend on their healing power and create a bloody mess. One character that does that well, but when you have two, it gets a little overwhelming. With that in mind, Deadpool and Wolverine: WWIII #1 is a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Deadpool and Wolverine: WWIII #1
Despite its fantastic action scenes, Deadpool and Wolverine: WWIII #1 did not hit the beats to hook me into the story.
