THE OBLIQUE HORIZON
Hexagon Bridge #5 starts off with Staden, Adley, and the rest of the team receiving long-awaited information about the nature of the Hexagon Bridge, and the history of those who have crossed over in the past. The topic then shifts to a mysterious boy who has been seen, who also has someone who has managed not to be affected like all the others by the Hexagon Bridge. Staden and the others go in search for him, only to eventually come across a picture of Adley and her parents. Realizing that there’s something important there, Adley decides to cross over herself. Once there she follows a paper trail left by the picture, which leads her to the mysterious boy. He then explains more of what has been happening in the surreal dimension they’re in. He then reveals the truth about who he is and explains what will happen next.
SURREAL AND OBTUSE TO THE BITTER END
Hexagon Bridge #5 is the final issue of this miniseries, so it has to serve as some sort of conclusion and it certainly does so, effectively. But, not necessarily in a satisfying way. This issue goes out of its way to finally give the reader some insight into what exactly has been going on, but it does this in a pair of large info dumps, that still somehow leaves some things in an ambiguous state. These info dumps come off more as obligation to us readers rather than anything really meaningful. The rest of this issue is almost wordless, almost like it’s giving you one last moment to really look around and take in this strange world that was created. Having a cut and dry story doesn’t seem like it was ever the goal of this series though, but rather to raise questions and force thought and this is where this issue is most effective. By the end of this issue there’s a lot left up in the air about the future of A.I., how it’s conjoined with humanity, and how they’ll eventually have to take different yet parallel paths as they continue to develop. So, while this issue is far from cathartic, it is engaging and likely to stick with you for a while.
A SHOWCASE
As mentioned above, Hexagon Bridge #5 has large sections that have no dialog. In these moments you get some of the best work that Richard Blake has done for this series. It’s hard to explain just how cool it is to see a mid-century car flying across a congested city of old-world architecture that eventually stretches into a surreal vision of the future complete with impossible machinery and expressions of consciousness. The whole series has been amazing to look at, but this final issue really takes the cake.
BOTTOM LINE: A FINALE THAT’LL LINGER
Much like the previous four issues that preceded it, Hexagon Bridge #5 is not a flashy or particularly eventful comic. But it does plenty to leave us readers thinking about the themes and ideas brought up. It’s an issue that doesn’t wrap up the story so much as it creates a filter for us to look at our own existences through. Plus, it’s absolutely gorgeous. 4.5 out of 5 stars
