Previously in Ms. Marvel: Ms. Marvel has an inactivated mutant power discovered when Krakoa resurrected her after her timely death. Working with the X-Men, Kamala is investigating the Orchis-funded tech program at Empire State University. However, she is now the target of Dr. Nitika Gaiha and Omega Sentient. Dr. Gaiha has placed a drone into Ms. Marvel, allowing her to control Kamala’s subconscious.

    WHAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF

Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #3 starts with Kamala dreaming and Bruno monitoring her. She encounters Dr. Surfer, a fanfic she once wrote featuring a combination of Dr. Strange and Silver Surfer. Kamala discovers a memory where she is put into the same school project as her friends and realizes that she isn’t into labels and that she is, in fact, an individual. This is when Orchis’ Trojan horse activates. Dr. Gaiha could send a psychic wave that could kill all mutants through Ms. Marvel’s brain using the drone in her brain. The Trojan horse takes the form of Kamala’s latent mutant power, promising that if she learns about her abilities, she can discover her power.

Kamala realizes this is too easy and rejects the identity of the mutant, while Bruno learns that there is a drone in her brain. Bruno starts hacking the drone, and Kamala refuses the virus and wakes up. As Bruno and Kamala breathe that they survived, a sentinel appears with the hated line, “Mutant Detected.”

    WAITING PATIENTLY

I think anyone who picked up this title is waiting to discover Kamala’s new power. From a narrative perspective, I understand that she will accept or reject her mutation by the end of the series. In the meantime, I’m sitting on the edge of my seat reading Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #3, impatiently waiting. The writing does an excellent job of teasing this reveal while providing an engaging narrative.

I realize that I like this story because it has the themes I love about the X-Men: people figuring out who they are through their mutation and the prejudice that comes with it. But it shows this in a single character rather than a theme. And a character that is already well-developed. While thematically, a lot of these ideas have been done before, it is nice to see a new interpretation of them with a unique character.

On top of that, the art and coloring are really well done. I appreciated the pop of colors that represented those dream sequences interspersed with the cool colors of the Orchis laboratory. It was well thought out and very well done by the creative team.

    BOTTOM LINE: INVESTED

I want to know pretty badly where Marvel is taking this character. Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #3 promises a lot of adventure for this hero, but I am unsure what direction Kamala is going. And I think that mystery is exciting. This comic is a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars, and I look forward to the next issue.
