Previously in Realm of X: After the Hellfire Gala, Magik, Mirage, Typhoid Mary, Marrow, Dust, and Curse find themselves in Vanaheim. Magik is depowered, and Curse is in the care of Saturnyne, who intends to use Curse’s power to unlock an ancient well of Vanir’s power. Meanwhile, Mirage, Dust, Marrow, and Typhoid Mary launch an attack on Saturnyne’s forces while Magik ventures on her own.
Realm of X #3 begins with Saturnyne dispatching her forces to confront the intruders, revealing herself as the antagonist. Mirage, Marrow, Dust, and Mary are forced to retreat, resulting in the death of Trabin, the leader of House Muit. Meanwhile, Magik, depowered, infiltrates Emberstone Citadel and converses with Curse. She attempts to persuade Curse that Saturnyne is purposefully isolating her, but Curse remains unconvinced and flees. Saturnyne then hurls Magik off a cliff. Subsequently, Curse confronts her captor and utilizes her ability to compel Saturnyne to reveal the truth behind her plans.
Realm of X is an intriguing narrative that delves into themes of isolation, leadership demise, the onset of war, and intricate interpersonal drama. However, Realm of X #3 presented a significant issue for me, detracting from these pivotal moments. The artwork feels somewhat cartoonish, almost akin to a Saturday morning cartoon, lacking the emotional impact required for the content conveyed. While a story can sometimes effectively use an unconventional art style, this comic was divisive for me in this regard. Despite the well-written and drawn complex themes, they fail to coalesce effectively.
While I admire these characters, this particular miniseries falls short of expectations. It hints at exploring profound ideas but doesn’t quite hit the mark. Nevertheless, I continue to follow this title in anticipation of something more. With that in mind, Realm of X #3 earns a 2.5 out of 5 stars.
