Amazon Studios is producing a piece of struck work inspired by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. We want all Spoilerites to have the best viewing experience possible and have the widest knowledge base about the Second Age of Middle-Earth. This is a weekly Let’s Get Nerdy article series highlighting a different piece of Tolkien I think you need to know about!
Spoilerites, we now live in a world where the WGA strike is over and the SAG-AFTRA strike continues. If you want more context about what that means be sure to check out my latest Did You Hear? feature where I break down the current state of things on both sides and what it means for the entertainment industry as a whole.
In July when the SAG-AFTRA strike went into place we saw a lot of talent pulling out of San Diego Comic-Con very quickly or otherwise reducing their presence. Now leading up to New York Comic Con we’ve seen the end of the WGA strike and the sudden announcements of television and film writers being added to line ups and dockets across the largest comic book show in North America.
But what does that mean for [struck work Amazon Prime Tolkien show]?
Sadly, very little. On the official New York Comic Con website nothing whatsoever comes up when you search the name of the show. However, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing Lord of the Rings related happenings in The Big Apple for the weekend.
One of the show’s featured Guests is Allison Sohn – a name trading card collectors should recognize! Sohn is known for her contributions to The Lord of the Rings trading cards. New York Comic Con would be the perfect opportunity to get a unique sketch or your favourite card signed.
In terms of panels, there isn’t much for the Tolkien-inclined going on at New York Comic Con. A cursory search of Panels and programming brings up one result: Who Runs the Fantasy World? Girls! with the description reading as follows:
The world of fantasy has often felt dominated by men. Most of the genre’s best-known authors (George R. R. Martin, J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis) are male – and out of the 34 writers who have been named Grand Masters by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, only six have been female. This panel celebrates the women who are breaking barriers and disrupting this space, introducing you to the next big names in fantasy lit. These creators will discuss how women are changing the genre and creating entirely new, unique fandoms.
The Exclusives page reveals only one offering as well, but as a massive Gondor fangirl, myself, I have to admit it goes right to my heart: Cordy’s Corner is featuring the Lord of the Rings Tree of Gondor exclusive mini backpack from Loungefly.
For collectibles I usually head straight to the Weta Workshop booth with my eyes on the Mini Epics line – the collectibles I’ve been hoping, dreaming, and wishing for my entire Lord of the Rings loving life – but as of right now I can’t find a booth spot listed. If something like this appeals to you I’d recommend checking back next Wednesday when any and all announcements have been made.
Compared to last year, the over/under on the world of Tolkien at New York Comic Con is rather low. My hypothesis would be a more dense offering next year when the strike has lifted, Amazon Prime is back on their new content marketing game, and the following secondary market of consumer products has caught up.
If you happen to see me wandering around New York Comic Con you can always stop me for a Lord of the Rings-related chat and a selfie!
