Previously in Silk: Silk, a.k.a. Cindy Moon, is a web-spinning superhero bitten by the same spider as Spider-Man. Currently, Saya Ishii and Max have trapped Cindy in a dream world with a deadly monster. Her only hope is Albert, who seeks help from Wong, master of the mystic arts!
Silk #3 shows us the next dream world for Silk, where her pirate fantasies have come to life! She realizes that she is dreaming but is unsure how to handle the situation, choosing to go along with the pirate fighting until she can think. On the other hand, Albert has managed to contact Wong, who reveals the monster to be a Ja-Li, a sleep demon. The demon is feeding off of Silk’s psychic energy. Since Silk is connected to the Web of Life and Destiny, eventually, the Ja-Li will absorb enough power to become corporeal in the real world.
To avoid this, Wong casts a spell on Albert to warn Cindy of her situation. He also gives Albert a Crystal of Breksta, a powerful relic in the dream world. As Albert falls under the spell and enters Silk’s dreams, the Ja-Li focuses on him. Luckily, he still manages to help Silk and deliver the item. Meanwhile, Wong stops the spell to defend himself against Max, who has appeared. As Silk defeats the Ja-Li, she wakes up suddenly to see that the Ja-Li monster has merged with Saya!
Silk #3 played into my childhood fantasy of wanting to be a pirate. I grew up with Hook and later Pirates of the Caribbean, so the concept of a pirate dream played well into my psyche. What I liked about the story was how simple the writing and relatable all the characters seemed. I believe in Silk and Albert in this story. I think they’re acting and feeling the way their narration boxes or dialogue are telling me. Silk #3 has a remarkable unity of story and art that puts me right in that moment. However, the book feels safe; we aren’t taking a massive risk with this story and introducing new ideas. I hope we get some complexity in the themes as we head into the final two issues. This book has the potential for a comparison of Saya and Mark to Cindy and Albert. I almost want to see what this family relationship looks like in both issues, and it feels only briefly touched upon here. Maybe next time, there will be a little more detail in that.
I enjoyed reading Silk #3. I read maybe 5-6 comics to figure out what I would write about, and I chose this one because it is engaging and well thought-out. While I wanted a little more complexity, this comic is great for what it is. And with that in mind, this is a 4 out of 5 stars, and I’ll look forward to the final couple of issues.
