Spoilerites, if you’re reading this feature the day it is published you probably know TONIGHT is Preview Night at San Diego Comic-Con 2023! Last year (2022), was the first year post-lockdown there even was a San Diego Comic-Con during its regular summer slot. Last year we had the half-measure requirements which came along with most cons in 2022: mask requirements, social distancing, and strange complications none of us really knew how to deal with. As someone who attended, the vibes were weird (!!!), I’m not going to lie to you. One of the coolest things about the convention was the HUGE visual presence Amazon Studios invested in for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
Admittedly, I would have liked for an off-site experience or activation, but the imagery abounded and the panel presentation for the show was huge:
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power FULL PANEL | San Diego Comic-Con 2022
No Description
This year San Diego Comic-Con has emerged from the shadow of Covid protocols, but now sits with the stigma of the WGA strike hanging overhead, the impending SAG-AFTRA strike and studio after studio after studio pulling any-and-all presence from the largest North American pop culture convention.
The above stated reasons alone would be enough to likely keep The Rings of Power from showing up. The show runners – some of the most recognizable champions for the series – won’t be able to attend unless the WGA strike is resolved by July 19th (less they engage in scabbing behaviour), and if SAG-AFTRA strikes then none of the cast can appear in the act of promoting the series lest the same thing happen to them.
Couple this with the fact The Rings of Power only wrapped shooting a few short weeks ago there is a very limited timeline for any teaser, scene, or sneak peek to be rendered with the full breadth and width of visual effects and finishes a high fantasy show like this requires.
… don’t get me started on the episode-to-episode budget!
This is all to state: sadly, no, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is not slated to have any sort of meaningful presence at San Diego Comic-Con this year. We’ll have to turn our collective gaze on October and New York Comic Con and hope.
