Amazon Studios The Rings of Power is here. We want all Spoilerites to have the best viewing experience possible and have the widest knowledge base about the Second Age of Middle-Earth. This is a weekly Let’s Get Nerdy article series highlighting a different piece of Tolkien I think you need to know about!
I’ve written quite a bit about Celeborn over the course of Let’s Get Nerdy! As a quick refresher: Celeborn is
the husband of Galadriel. Together they have a daughter name Celebrían who goes on to marry Elrond and then give birth to three children – including Arwen Evenstar Undomiel, who fans of The Lord of the Rings film trilogy met in 2001 as portrayed by Liv Tyler.
Faithful viewers of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 1 learned Galadriel’s husband was dead. Faithful viewers of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 1 who are also book readers were confused. After a while I think we’ve all come around to the idea that Celeborn is not so much dead as thought dead. This may seem like splitting hairs, but I think it goes a long way.
Since then I’ve put my Sherlock Holmes-esque deerstalker hat on and have been doing detective work in order to figure out just how this could be done and I think I’ve figured out where we’re going to meet Celeborn in The Rings of Power for the first time!
Given how The Rings of Power wrapped up with the reveal of Halbrand’s true identity one could argue Eregion has fallen. It hasn’t been attacked, but its integrity has certainly been compromised. There’s a good chance the second season will showcase the internal strife characters like Galadriel, Elrond, and Celebrimbor have suffered creep out into the prosperous region at large.
Cue: Celeborn!
I don’t necessarily suspect we’ll learn Celeborn has been one of the the elf smiths we’ve seen toiling away in the background of the first season, but I suspect we may meet a new crop of elf smiths come in to help Celebrimbor continue to craft the “Seven for the Dwarf Lords” and “Nine for mortal men” we know are due down the pike. This would be a straightforward way to introduce Celeborn. Perhaps he’s suffered amnesia? Perhaps he, like Galadriel, thought his wife death? There are several many story possibilities for how to get him to Eregion for a timely reconciliation.
Celeborn is noted to be the “wisest” elf in Middle-Earth. Per J.R.R. Tolkien in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring:
‘Your quest is known to us,’ said Galadriel, looking at Frodo. ‘But we will not here speak of it more openly. Yet not in vain will it prove, maybe, that you came to this land seeking aid, as Gandalf himself plainly purposed. For the Lord of the Galadhrim is accounted the wisest of the elves of Middle-earth, and a giver of gifts beyond the power of kings….’
“the Lord of the Galadhrim” being a title held by Celeborn.
If Celebrimbor, Gil-Galad, or any other character we’re familiar with inThe Rings of Power is looking for a solution for the growing darkness in Middle-Earth doesn’t it scan they would consult the “wisest” elf they knew to help problem solve? Even if he did have a hefty head injury and couldn’t remember his name when they first met?
Celeborn and Galadriel are one of the power couples of The Lord of the Rings canon and I happen to find they idea they could be reconnected through the power of their intelligence just delightful!
