Amazon Studios The Rings of Power is here. We want all Spoilerites to have the best viewing experience possible and have the widest knowledge base about the Second Age of Middle-Earth. This is a weekly Let’s Get Nerdy article series highlighting a different piece of Tolkien I think you need to know about!
During a livestream featuring predictions and information about the upcoming second season of The Rings of Power Fellowship of Fans made the report the iconic beast Shelob will appear. The phrase they use specifically in the stream is “featured” and I want to get into the minutiae of that word as I put my tinfoil conspiracy theory hat on right now in order to continue writing this feature for you.

In the breakdown of the casting hierarchy in the Hollywood entertainment industry “Featured” is one step above “Background”. In fact the phrase “Featured Extra” is often used to describe a character we will see often through a television series, though will likely remain unnamed, and will absolutely never speak. One of the best genre fiction television examples of this is the character Morn in the series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Thus, if Shelob does appear in The Rings of Power she is likely to share about as much screen time as the three witches who are searching for Sauron I wrote about three weeks ago at the behest of a Spoilerite.
We don’t know any of their names. We don’t know what they want. They literally spoke two words.
… now this is the point in this article where I refrain from making a comparison between Young Sheldon and Young Shelob …
… but the spinoff series potential is INCREDIBLE!
Per the Tolkien book canon by The Second Age of Middle-Earth, when The Rings of Power is set, Shelob is well-established in her lair in Cirith Ungol – the very place we see her encounter Frodo, Sam, and Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King film (or The Two Towers, scream the book readers in the background!). She already had a reputation across Middle-Earth for being a deadly killer, who even from time-to-time ate her own children. It’s very Cronus-esque, if you’re a fan of Greco-Roman mythology. During the Second Age Shelob was even more aggressive in her attacks than when we see her during The Third Age being known to leave her home in Cirith Ungol and
“silently pursue and kill it.”
And there’s the rub.
If I was going to make a guess – and I am! – the above short quote is how we’ll see Shelob. Perhaps a Southlander, perhaps Sauron, perhaps a member of the Army of Mordor will come across Shelob and not make it out of the encounter alive. If the choice is Sauron there’s an opportunity for The Rings of Power showrunners to establish the tacit respect and relationship between the two characters who cohabitate to keep Mordor as scary as it is.
