Amazon Studios The Rings of Power is here. We want all Spoilerites to have the best viewing experience possible and have the widest knowledge base about the Second Age of Middle-Earth. This is a weekly Let’s Get Nerdy article series highlighting a different piece of Tolkien I think you need to know about!
Things sure are moving fast in the world of The Rings of Power these days! We know the original Lord of the Rings film trilogy took forever to film (including all the amazing extended scenes we got for my beloved Extended Editions), we know The Rings of Power was in development for a long time, and like their HBO produced rival House of the Dragon, we learned The Rings of Power was going to go ahead and shoot without writers on set when the WGA went on strike on May 2nd of this year. There has been so much slow progress then last week @FellowshipOfFans on Twitter (who has supplied myself and other Lord of the Rings-obsessed with lots of leaks and tidbits over the years!), tweeted that shooting has wrapped on The Rings of Power season 2:

If Amazon Studios is eyeing a House of Dragon competitive second season launch for The Rings of Power in 2024 principle photography would have to be completed this year in order to allow at least a year for the variety of post production houses they must have under their employ to begin the heavy lifting of bringing Middle-Earth to live for streaming audiences everywhere.
Assuming Amazon Studios didn’t build a ton of new sets and reused already scouted and approved filming locations with the aim of producing 6 – 10 new episodes for The Rings of Power season 2 it’s not totally outside of the realm of possibility that this rumour could be true. We do know shooting began fairly close to the ending of the first season of The Rings of Power. That being written, I feel as though I didn’t hear a ton of news about shooting until the beginning of this year. Six months may seem like an incredibly long time to produce a short order of television as we now have in the age of streaming, but consider The Rings of Power shoots across at least three continents and has a massive – what feels like – ever expanding cast. It’s a lot of moving parts to pull together and produce stories around.

Could this mean we’re eyeing a summer/fall release date next year? I think there’s a decent chance. This would also put The Rings of Power season 2 in prime jockeying position for the 2024 television award season.
Yes, I’m going to ring this bell again: there was also a not insignificant portion produced without on-set writers. As with House of the Dragon it will be fascinating if audience members notice anything different.
Back to the Tweet: if the after party is going to be happening in London when Fellowship of Fans suggests I’m hoping internet sleuths catch some of the looks. Could be fun!
