Amazon Studios The Rings of Power is here. We want all Spoilerites to have the best viewing experience possible and have the widest knowledge base about the Second Age of Middle-Earth. This is a weekly Let’s Get Nerdy article series highlighting a different piece of Tolkien I think you need to know about!
In the time I’ve been writing about The Rings of Power here for you, I’ve written about almost 20 new cast members. The last big casting announcement came in March, so it feels correct to go through these announcements and cross the big 2-0 off as a fun milestone!
In March Variety reported on three additional casting announcements including:
Ciarán Hinds, Rory Kinnear and Tanya Moodie!
For many readers I would bet the name Ciarán Hinds stands out the most. Whether or not you know why you know the name Ciarán Hinds it probably catches the eye. If you were a Game of Thrones watcher or checked out ANY of the versions of the Justice League movies then you have seen Ciarán Hinds’ work. The venerated character actor played Mance Rayder the Ranger of the Knight’s Watch-turned-Wildling lord who is a key part of Jon Snow’s character arc and portrayed the iconic DC Comics’ villain Steppenwolf in both Justice League and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. To have Hinds joining the ranks of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power feels nothing but correct, in my opinion.
For myself, I always think of Rory Kinnear as Bill Tanner from the Daniel Craig era James Bond films. He also recently starred in the A24 horror movie Men and for his portrayal of various different characters throughout Penny Dreadful and its spinoff series. He’s another great genre actor who feels very much at home joining the ranks of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
Rounding out this latest casting announcement is actor Tanya Moodie. Yes, that’s right! General Parnadee, herself! Tanya Moodie has also played prominent roles in A Discovery of Witches and a hilarious appearance in Ghosts. Like Hinds and Kinnear, Moodie has extensive experience playing a variety of characters in genre fiction. It feels nothing short of correct to me to have her cast in the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
My lazy, easy guess at their respective castings based on what I know of each actor’s respective works and the types of casting choices The Rings of Power has made up to this point is they’ll all be Númenoreans. There are canon roles I could easily slot them into. I could also see Hinds as a Southlander with Kinnear and Moodie stepping into the roles of Harfoots very easily. If this is the case they’re more likely to be playing original-to-the-show characters than characters from the Tolkien canon.
Whether or not my predictions turn out to be true all three actors are going to bring a real vibrancy to the screen. I would love to read casting predictions from you in the comments!
