    SINS OF SINISTER: DOMINION #1

    Writer: Kieron Gillen

    Colorist: Bryan Valenza
    Letterer: Clayton Cowles
    Editor: Jordan White
    Publisher: Marvel Comics

    Release Date: April 26th, 2023

Previously in Sins of Sinister: It has been 1,000 years since Sinister used his Moira Machine to implant his DNA into every mutant. In his new future, Sinister created an assortment of chimeras and mutants that ruled the known universe. However, things got out of control, and Sinister lost his Moira Machine. All the major players move towards the World Farm to try and reset the world in their own vision, including Mother Righteous, Professor X, and the original Moira MacTaggert.

    THE END IS NEAR

Sins of Sinister: Dominion #1 converges multiple ideas. Juggernaut destroys the door protecting the Moira Machine, and Ironfire holds Sinister prisoner. Beast and Professor X fight, along with extensive cameos from chimera and other mutants. Through the chaos, Sinister escapes to his lab and sees Moira there, and Sinister enacts his psychic inferno fail-safe. This kills any person modified with Sinister’s X-gene and uses them as fuel to turn Sinister into a god. But in another timeline, another Dominion Sinister exists outside of time and space and blocks this Sinister’s ascension. Ironside kills Sinister, and Moira resets in the timeline.

In the present, Moira finds Sinister and destroys the Moira Machine. She then summons Rasputin IV, with full memories of the alternative timeline, and turns Sinister into the Quiet Council. Sinister is sent to the Pit, and Rasputin IV attributes Mother Righteous as their savior. Mother Righteous reveals that Hope, Exodus, Professor X, and Emma Frost have the Sinister gene. To save themselves from potential corruption, the four Quiet Council members also go to the Pit until they can verify they are at their full faculties. However, there is still a Sinister Dominion out there.

    A NEW ERA

Well, I guess the X-Men continuity wants to eliminate the most powerful psychics. With this right on the heels of the death of Magneto, I feel that there will be a considerable gap in familiarity with what we know and love about the X-men universe. But the Krakoa era has been solid overall, so I want to see what stories they will tell without Charles Xavier and Emma Frost at the forefront of the storylines.

Sins of Sinister: Dominion #1 concludes a convoluted art with great mastery. The storyline took 1,000 years of supposed history into eleven comic books. At times, this comic felt overwhelming, but I could digest it within a read-through. Thematically, I’m stuck on the theme of power corrupts. Most of the notable characters in this storyline sought power, which corrupted them to make them want more and more. While the Sinister-gene is the excuse for why characters became corrupt, it is a fascinating insight into what the characters are capable of and truly how dangerous Krakoa could be.

The art was extremely well done. There are a lot of new character designs within the story, and each one was discernable to which characters they were but also wholly unique. The splash pages were visually stunning, and I am glad for the creative team’s work.

    BOTTOM LINE: ENGAGED

I want to know more about the future storylines that emerge from this. I initially thought the reset would just return us to the status quo. Instead, it looks like we are getting a slew of new storylines to explore. Kieron Gillen masterfully concluded this art in a double-sized issue. While not every aspect of the event was for me, Sins of Sinister: Dominion #1 is a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars.
