Scott Pilgrim vs The World Anime Headed to Netflix
Yesterday Scott Pilgrim vs the World director Edgar Wright enthralled Twitter when he announced Scott Pilgrim would be getting an anime adaptation:
edgarwright on Twitter: “This is not a drill! This is happening! After much musing over the years about there being potential for an anime adaptation of ‘Scott Pilgrim’, I’m thrilled to say one is IMMINENT, with the whole cast back together and… you are going to lose your minds. pic.twitter.com/LyB7EIlcUD / Twitter”

The anime sees all of the cast of the original live-action movie reprising their roles as the voices as the same characters:

AND the project will be housed at streaming giant, Netflix, who has had the streaming rights to the original Scott Pilgrim vs the World movie for a minute.
Fans were, understandably, excited. What I find interesting about this announcement is that it comes in the wake of Netflix having their first set of months without subscriber numbers going up, Netflix going through waves of layoffs over the past few months, and the general upheaval of streaming services right now. What is interesting is this anime project proves how high the streaming numbers on Scott Pilgrim vs the World must be. Which is interesting (there’s that word again!), since the original movie was considered a flop at the time.
In the ongoing battle for IP I wonder what has drawn Netflix to Scott Pilgrim vs the World. I love that the original cast has been reunited, while at the same time I am left wondering how expensive this project is. Actors like Chris Evans are guaranteed to be much more expensive in a post Captain America world.
This is definitely a story I’ll be writing more about as news breaks.
Starfleet Academy Announced + 3 Star Trek Renewals
My fellow Trekkies, this week was a good week for us!
Earlier this week it was announced the long-awaited Starfleet Academy live action show is finally happening!
Per THR:
The drama will follow the “blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries [and]first loves” of a new class of Starfleet cadets who are as young as 16.
… with fans making associations between this show and The CW network almost immediately.
Nancy Drew showrunner, Noga Landau, will serve as showrunner and released the following quote about the series:
Starfleet Academy “will introduce us to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.”
Franchise Chief Alex Kurtzman added with Landau:
“Admission is now open to Starfleet Academy! Explore the galaxy! Captain your destiny! For the first time in over a century, our campus will be re-opened to admit individuals a minimum of 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor and devotion to a cause greater than themselves. The coursework will be rigorous, the instructors among the brightest lights in their respective fields, and those accepted will live and study side-by-side with the most diverse population of students ever admitted. Today we encourage all who share our dreams, goals and values to join a new generation of visionary cadets as they take their first steps toward creating a bright future for us all. Apply today! Ex Astris, Scientia!”
… and chief marketing officer and head of data, Paramount Streaming, Domenic DiMeglio stated:
“We are excited to introduce Star Trek fans to a whole new generation of Starfleet officers in training as they navigate the rigors of the Academy and the brink of adulthood. Introducing new characters and compelling storylines, this all-new original series will serve as a fantastic addition to the franchise and Paramount+, bringing new generations of viewers and long-term Star Trek fans alike together to enjoy the next chapter in the iconic Star Trek universe.”
The news about Starfleet Academy came on the heels of Variety announcing Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, and Prodigy all being renewed for new seasons.
Per Variety:
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” has been renewed for Season 3 while “Star Trek: Lower Decks” has been renewed for Season 5 at Paramount+.
The new seasons of both shows will consist of 10 episodes. In addition, Season 2 of “Strange New Worlds” and Season 4 of “Lower Decks” will both debut this summer. “Strange New Worlds” Season 2 will premiere on June 15 on Paramount+ in the U.S., the U.K., Australia, Latin America, Brazil, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. New episodes will then drop weekly thereafter. “Lower Decks” will return in late summer, but an exact date has yet to be announced.
Finally, Season 2 of the Nickelodeon animated series “Star Trek: Prodigy” is set to air this coming winter. Season 1 of that show originally launched in late 2021, with the second half of the season airing in late 2022.
Coincidence we got all these announcements the week before Star Wars Celebration: Europe? I think not!
