Previously in Immoral X-Men: Mister Sinister used Moira’s DNA to create save points so that he could reset the timeline if he failed. After numerous attempts, he managed to affect most of the Quiet Council with his DNA and slowly took over the world. However, the Quiet Council rejected Mister Sinister and used him as a prisoner scientist. Now the Quiet Council looks to extend their empire to space as the Immoral X-Men!
THE LAST STRAW
Immoral X-Men #2 starts with Hope and Exodus destroying a Kree-Skull fleet. Hope Summers seems to be part cyborg now and is still the target of Exodus’ obsession. After the battle, the Quiet Council observes Sinister making a new Rasputin IV, a chimera with five different powers and a soul sword. Realizing that Sinister no longer serves a purpose, they prepare to finally dispose of him. Sinister is visited by Mother Righteous, who reveals that she is a clone of Nathaniel Essex designed to study magic.
Meanwhile, Exodus lays a trap for Hope, who states that her purpose as a messiah is to inspire hope as a martyr rather than live as a leader. Additionally, Sinister teaches Rasputin IV morality and lets her steal the new Marauder ship to reset the timeline.
HOPE FOR THE FUTURE AND THE PAST
Immoral X-Men #2 is my favorite issue in the Sins of Sinister event thus far. Mother Righteous is finally revealed and questions religion for this weird timeline. Hope recently had an exciting place in Krakoa due to her part in the resurrection process and replacing Magneto on the Quiet Council. But watching her as part cyborg was a compelling choice. Tech/Science is often seen as the anthesis of religion. Watching her with a robot arm with a laser gun betrayed by Exodus is an interesting analogy, and I wonder if that was its original intention. This is further cemented by Mother Righteous revealing to be an Essex designed to study magic versus the general science vibe we expect from Mister Sinister. Great food for thought here.
On top of that, the art is solid. The facial expressions throughout the issue are detailed and express a lot of characterization. With concrete background art, I am incredibly impressed with the creative team on this comic issue.
BOTTOM LINE: GREAT READ
Immoral X-Men #2 is well-paced and well-designed. This issue shows the epitome of what could be done within this event. Unfortunately, I don’t know if this event can have this sort of food for thought in future issues without destroying the major narrative arcs. Regardless, Immoral X-Men #2 is a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars.
