Previously in New Mutants: Check out the new mutants. Once upon a time, they were members who were too young to join the X-Men but old enough to be trained. Over time, they developed a rich history as both teens and adults with old and new members!
New Mutants: Lethal Legion #1 starts with a monologue by Escapade, a newly recruited New Mutant, and her first mission. She then talks to Cerebella, who is upset despite rescuing some kids. Meanwhile, Wolfsbane meets with Morgan Red, who is being evicted and is upset that Escapade isn’t here to help them. Wolfsbane then takes Morgan into the sewers to a secret base, where they are attacked by a sizeable mutant crocodile-type creature. Escapade and Cerebella plan to take matters into their own hands and plan to take down Count Nefaria with the help of Scout. Their objective is to go to one of the Count’s recruitment rallies dressed as villains and take him out there!
I’m not familiar with the New Mutant team. When I picked this up, I was hoping for a new experience learning about characters I slightly know. In New Mutants: Lethal Legion #1, I wasn’t adequately introduced to the characters. Escapade and Morgan were introduced last year in their Pride title. I know she is transgender and likes to target corrupt organizations, but I don’t know much about her personality. As the characters introduced this plot, I found my interest waning because I wasn’t gripped by the characterization or the book’s conflict.
On top of that, I found the art simple. The character designs felt unique, but the foreground and background blurred together. This storyline has great potential, but this first issue didn’t work for me.
New Mutants: Lethal Legion #1 felt a bit rushed. These characters are blank slates to tell a great story but don’t have enough space to fully be explored within this first issue. Maybe it will pick up in the subsequent comics. 3 out of 5 stars for New Mutants: Lethal Legion #1.

New Mutants: Lethal Legion #1 failed to grab my attention but showed potential for the remaining miniseries.
