Previously in X-Men Red: Abigail Brand is up to no good. She is increasing tension between Shi’ar and Mutants and has thrown Vulcan off as an intergalactic powder keg. Meanwhile, Arakko is recovering from the death of Magneto, and Cable is leading a team to uncover the true intentions of Brand.
THE TRUMP CARD
X-Men Red #9 starts with the resurrection of Vulcan on Krakoa, where Professor X tries to repair Vulcan’s mind. Fast forward, Vulcan crashed the diplomatic meeting between the Shi’ar empire, the mutants, and other galactic powers. Vulcan chose violence, started attacking the people there, and focused his attention on Deathbird. However, it was not Deathbird sitting on the throne, but Sunspot, who could absorb some of Vulcan’s abilities. Vulcan retreats to search for Deathbird, only to find himself face-to-face with Storm!
Meanwhile, Cable and the team attempt to escape Brand’s trap in S.W.O.R.D. Station Two. However, dealing with the creators may prove to be a brutal fight.
BACK ON BOARD
After the last couple of issues, I was unsure if I would continue reading X-Men Red. I picked up this series because I liked the idea of a Brotherhood of Mutants on Arakko that could be equal to the X-Men in scope. When Magneto died, it seemed that we would lose that premise. However, X-Men Red #9 brought Storm and Sunspot back into the spotlight and proved that they aren’t going to be background characters in this story arc. And it is nice to see people standing up to Abigail and her shenanigans. I can’t wait for the next issue to see this battle between Sunspot and Storm, which is sure to be visually stunning.
The themes of X-Men Red #9 are unclear to me. We are currently stuck with multiple parties trying to better the world. But I don’t know if they have succeeded in making that theme attractive. Hopefully, with Vulcan and Abigail as the antagonists, that central theme will become clear again.
BOTTOM LINE: GREAT WORK
I was impressed with the creative team’s direction with X-Men Red #9, and now I want to know more about what is happening. The politics of Arakko and the larger galactic picture is incredibly engaging, and this comic is a 4 out of 5 for me.
