Previously in Antioch: Antioch is an eco-terrorist who targets corporations and oil companies. However, when he found out Frontiersman was arrested, he decided to turn himself in. There aren’t many friendly faces in prison, and both he and Frontiersman may not make it to trial.
A FRESH FACE
Antioch #2 starts with Antioch arriving at the prison. The warden immediately establishes his authority by cutting Antioch’s hair. Frontiersman greets Antioch to figure out who he is, deciding not to rely on the rumors to make his opinion. However, they are approached by Lyle Stern, who acts as an information dump about how their powers are diminished due to a powered individual everyone calls a witch. Frontiersman is then targeted by a contract killer named Sun God. Sun God attacks Frontiersman while another inmate backs the Sun God up. Antioch and Frontiersman defend themselves and start a brawl before the guards intervene.
Meanwhile, Warden Lawler is given orders to ensure that Antioch does not make it a trial.
A NEW PARTNERSHIP
Antioch #2 explores a new type of trope. Antioch is an eco-terrorist, and we are introduced to him as if he was a good guy. While his mission may be sound, he doesn’t give off the same heroic qualities we see from Frontiersman. So watching them on the same page, the gruff old man and the younger superpowered “King” proves to be a fascinating physical and emotional dynamic. However, the reason why Antioch turned himself in is a mystery, and I wonder if he has an escape plan. This theme of the ecology battle is overshadowed because Antioch decided to go to jail, and the meta-narrative about the prison system may come to the forefront.
The facial structure of Antioch #2 caught my attention. Antioch and Frontiersman look sane and normal. All the other inmates and some of the guards have what I will call “crazy eyes.” This makes us gravitate to the two main characters because they look conventional. However, why is Antioch not wearing a shirt? Great work by Patrick and Marco for a great comic book with so much potential that I am on the edge of my seat for the next issue.
