Previously in TRVE KVLT: After Marty managed to commit the “perfect” crime, he and new employee Alison are kidnapped by the Church of the Immortal Mind. Veronika believes that Marty is a criminal mastermind and sends him on a mission to kill Doctor Shiver, the leader of the Church. Meanwhile, Bernice realizes that Marty is missing and goes to find him.
A PARTICULAR SET OF SKILLS
TRVE KVLT #3 starts with Veronika telling Marty the plan. He and Alison will go to the Church of the Immortal Heartbeat headquarters as lovers and go through their rituals. Once done, they will get a few minutes to descend underground to the 66th floor. From there, he will deploy a weapon that will kill Shiver. The beginning of the plan goes well, but Marty only sees himself holding a gun in a shifting bedroom during the ritual of Actualization. Alison arrives, knocks out a woman, and takes off the device. They then take the stairs down and contemplate why they are doing this.
Meanwhile, Bernice tracks Marty’s whereabouts in Veronika’s office and aggressively questions her about where she took her best friend!
SECOND GUESSING
TRVE KVLT #3 has a unique spot in the market. I find myself unsure of what is going to happen next, and it constantly keeps me on my toes. Take Alison; we get a brief glimpse that she was a getaway driver for her dad. But why is she so passionate about fast food? Why is Alison more concerned about how corporate views pretending to be Marty’s “intimate partner” than the kidnapping? This, tied with Marty’s constant overthinking and existential crisis, provides a unique foundation for a book. I want to read more to find out about these characters, more so than I care about the main plotline.
Sometimes, the panels were wordy. I didn’t mind it so much when they descended the stairs and talked. But when Veronika was talking, it felt a bit overwhelming and blocked the unique art style. I think it is primarily how the word bubble is placed on the page that made me notice it so much. Sometimes, the words felt overbearing, but perhaps that is just me.
The art style is growing on me. I wasn’t feeling the use of orange in the earlier issues, but this one had more diversity of colors. Great work by the creative team.
BOTTOM LINE: GETTING BETTER EVERY ISSUE
As the series continues, I find myself enjoying it more and more. There is a unique quirkiness that makes TRVE KVLT #3 very enjoyable. Or perhaps I was a kitchen worker for too long, and I am just empathetic to Marty. Regardless, this comic is a solid 4 out of 5, and I can’t wait for the next issue.
