Previously in Antioch: Frontiersman was arrested after accidentally killing a man in self-defense during a protest. However, Frontiersman has friends and enemies everywhere.

    A NEW CONTENDER

Antioch #1 is a character that attacks places that harm the environment. Initially, he is attacking an oil rig but changes focus when he hears that Frontiersman has been arrested. Meanwhile, Frontiersman is taken to a supervillain prison. He has a ton of enemies here, and the warden is treating him on the same level as actual supervillains. “Tower Tom” starts a fight with him. Since everyone is depowered, it is a fair brawl.

Antioch says goodbye to his crew and attacks an oil pipeline destroying a forest. However, he is attacked by Battle XX, a mercenary in a battle suit. Antioch defeats Battle XX but allows himself to get arrested.

    A NEW SAGA

Frontiersman was a great comic series that introduced us to a wondrous world. This series shows another prominent character in the universe and continues the theme of man versus society and man versus nature. Antioch #1 has a lot of promise, but the title character doesn’t have the same charm as Frontiersman. He seems more of a mystery and isn’t a relatable hero yet. As the miniseries progresses, I’m confident that the creative team will slowly reveal the characteristics of Antioch and allow the reader to become attached. Unlike Frontiersman, Antioch is going to be a slow burn. Luckily, this is an ongoing series where we can fully explore the character.

Antioch #1 continues the theme of nature’s destruction, capitalistic tendencies, and consequences. The villain, so far, is a company chopping down a forest for an oil pipeline. The antagonist is a mercenary for hire. Despite this, I’m unsure how Antioch fits into the theme. Frontiersman represented an old guy realizing he could still make a difference, but Antioch is a vastly different character. He wants to go to jail to meet Frontiersman, but why was his crime the oil pipeline? Hopefully, his motivations will be revealed next issue.

    BOTTOM LINE: THRILLING

Antioch #1 is an exciting new series from the creators of Frontiersman. It is cool to be at the forefront of a brand-new superhero universe. Especially when there aren’t decades of storylines to catch up on. Antioch #1 is a solid 4 out of 5 stars, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
