Previously in Lucky Devil: Stanley’s exorcism went wrong. He managed to get rid of the demon but kept his supernatural powers. He then found himself as a leader of a new cult, but this upsets the demons of hell. Now Stanley must try and bargain with Lucifer to see if he can save the lives of himself and the people around him.
STRIKING A BARGAIN
Lucky Devil #4 starts with Zed, Stanley’s old demon, helping Stanley hitch a ride to hell. The transport takes on the form of an ice cream truck. During the trip, the crew is attacked by a group of demon assassins. Stanley uses his power to freeze them in place, allowing them time to escape. The motley crew arrives at a strip club in hell where they meet up with Lucifer. The devil tries to take away Stanley’s power, but Stanley is able to resist. So instead, they strike a bargain. Stanley will continue to preach and evangelize but Satan will give him notes. He must be a puppet to the devil and in return, he and his friends will survive. Stanley agrees.
The miniseries ends with Stanley about to take the stage to preach to the masses. But he doesn’t feel like himself. He feels unsettled and uncertain. But when he does take the stage something changes, and he regains his confidence!
INTERESTING ENDING
My first readthrough of Lucky Devil #4 was disappointing. In the end, Stanley becomes the thing he is preaching against which is someone who is taking advantage of other people. Then I took a break and sat down for my second read and put some heavy thought into the story. And I realized that this ending is very intelligent. It brings the story full circle. Stanley started as a man getting pushed around and punished when he suddenly got these demon powers. The story ends with this man getting pushed around by Satan himself. And when you realize that, you see that Stanley hasn’t really changed at all, but he is living a life of higher stakes. That is a stroke of solid writing. While the story didn’t have this crazy battle between Stanley and Lucifer, it ended with a great, thoughtful finale.
BOTTOM LINE: GOOD FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Lucky Devil isn’t your run of the mill comic about good versus evil. Instead, it is about a man who was pushed, found some power to perhaps change his fate, and returned back to where he started. It is a philosophical discussion about what is your destiny and/or role in life. With that in mind, Lucky Devil #4 is a 4.5 out of 5 and I’m glad I picked up this series.
