IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
THE AUTUMNAL
Writer: Daniel Kraus
Artist: Chris Shehan
Publisher: Vault Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: After missing the funeral of her estranged mother, Kat and her daughter, Sybil, hope to fit into the quaint town of Comfort Notch. But the town’s obscure history and strange customs make it a struggle, leading to a shocking confrontation.
INGRID: Kat and Sybil have real problems of their own, and The Autumnal shows this to us straight on. But it takes things up a notch by tying their desperation into the town Kat grew up in. Comfort Notch is idyllic, but it doesn’t take long to see that there is something very strange just under the surface. As crisp as autumn leaves and as chilling as the first night of a hard frost, this is not a book to miss.
CANTO II #3 (OF 5)
Writer: David M. Booher
Artist: Drew Zucker
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: In their quest to lift the curse that will cause their clocks to stop, Canto and his friends sought help from Aulaura, the Warrior. But they discovered the Shrouded Man had cursed her people as well. After narrowly escaping the fearsome Furies, the clockwork knights flee to the river for safety. Now they plunge over the edge of a waterfall, learning the only path forward is… down?
CHRISTOPHER: I will always root for my small knight friend. I’m interested to see how much Aulaura is going to shine a light on Canto as a character.
COLONEL WEIRD: COSMOGOG #1
Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: Tyler Crook
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Wacky space adventurer Colonel Randall Weird leaves Black Hammer farm and embarks on a strange journey through space and time for something that he’s long forgotten with his sanity and life at stake!
INGRID: If you love Black Hammer, as I do, you are in for a treat. Colonel Weird is the strange astronaut character who has traveled through time and space so much that he’s become unhinged from reality. And now we finally get to see the story of who he is and what happened. I am so excited!
MATTHEW: The world of Black Hammer is so fun and full of creativity, I can’t help but look forward to this one, especially if it has more Talky-Walky.
GIGA # 1
Writer: Alex Paknadel
Artist: John Lê
Publisher: Vault Comicx
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Nobody knows why the skyscraper-sized mechs known as ‘Giga’ fought their bitter, centuries’ long war. All they know is that when the fighting finally stopped, the dormant Giga became humanity’s new habitat and new gods in one. When disgraced engineer Evan Calhoun finds an apparently murdered Giga, his society and the fascistic tech-centered religious order that controls it are rapidly thrown into chaos.
From writer Alex Paknadel (Friendo, Turncoat, Incursion) and rising star John Le comes another Vault & White Noise partnership about what happens after the mechs stop fighting.
INGRID: I am fascinated by so many things already in Giga #1. Who doesn’t love giant mechs? But to take a look at them long after a war, and then have them be associated with a fascistic religious order twists the whole concept of them into something that is new and futuristic, but also reverberates today. I’m really looking forward to this one.
LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #10
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: Ryan Sook
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: A grudge that has endured 1,000 years! The unstoppable behemoth Rogol Zaar has survived the millennium to haunt Jonathan Kent where he least expected it! It’s a menace so terrible the Legion of Super-Heroes may not survive. Was this the challenge Brainiac 5 predicted? Is the Legion up to the task? Plus, who is dating whom in the 31st century? Another searing chapter in the far-flung future of the DC Universe, courtesy of Bendis, Sook, and von Grawbadger!
MATTHEW: Is Bendis’ Legion run maddening? Sure, in all the ways that Bendis books are, including changed premises, dialogue that all sounds the same and tons of foreshadowing that may signify nothing. Yet, I can’t find myself hating this book as much as many of my Legion friends and contemporaries. It’s weird, wildly creative and they’re clearly having fun with it. Hell, I just found out who X-Ray Girl is! I’m enjoying this odd run.
SEX CRIMINALS #69
Writer: Matt Fraction
Artist: Chip Zdarsky
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: FINAL ISSUE! SERIES FINALE in which we skip ahead 39 issues and check in with how it all ends up a few years down the line. SPOILERS: pretty okay?
MATTHEW: This book has been a favorite of mine since the beginning, and I’m going to miss it. But, hey, at least they got to go out on a juvenile sex joke. That’s the way the characters would have wanted it.
X OF SWORDS: STASIS
Writer: Tini Howard and Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Mahmud Asrar and Pepe Larraz
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: A ritual. A parliament. A game begins.
CHRISTOPHER: The X of Swords series has been incredibly engaging and really shines a light on the theme of family. I think seeing heroes and villains work together against a threat has been incredibly interesting and redefines the status quo for the mutant species.
ROBOT OVERLORD: You are not judged by your efforts you put in; you are judged on your performance.
