GETTING SOME HELP
Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #2 starts off at The Impossible City with Moon Knight meeting with Tony Stark. After telling Tony the situation, Iron Man informs him that he doesn’t know how he or Doctor Strange could help him, who they really need is the deceased Hank Pym. Later on, back on Earth, a pair of crooks tied to the glimmer sales is on the run from Moon Knight and Hunter’s Moon. A third person in the backseat tells them that they better hope they can get away because getting caught by Moon Knight is a terrible fate. With the help of 8-Ball, the heroes are able to disable the getaway car and incapacitate the two crooks. That’s when the third person reveals their real identity and is able to take out the Midnight Mission trio. Later on, while licking his wounds, Moon Knight pulls Tigra aside to inform her of something that will be impactful to their mission but to her personally.
GOOD MOMENTS, BUT LIGHT
Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #2 can basically be broken down to three big moments and everything else that leads up to those moments. Seeing 8-Ball get a cool moment was nice and the reveal at the end about the fate of Hank Pym will obviously have lasting impact, but this issue is really all about the return and reveal of Cubist. The scene itself was handled wonderfully, the build up to it was ripe with tension and then the way they punked out Moon Knight and Hunter’s Moon after the reveal was effective in not only establishing Cubist as a physical threat but also one that won’t be solved by only fists and sticks. Everything else though, was kind of just there. Even the opening scene with Tony Stark was dull and when it wasn’t dull it was problematic in how casually they evoke Tony’s addiction problem as something that can just be utilized as a tool whenever drugs are part of the threat. It’s not like these moments are necessarily lows compared to the highs of this issue, they’re more like flats compared to the peaks.
STAR OF THE SHOW
There’s quite a bit to enjoy visually about Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #2. The subtle and not-so-subtle appearances of Khonshu randomly in the background is an interesting way to play on Marc’s connection to the god, but also shed doubt on his mental state, which has always been questionable. The main attraction though is absolutely the appearance of Cubist. The way his design is so out of place makes everything feel just unsettling enough to make things uncomfortable but not annoying. Then the way that the setting also transformed into a surrealist painting was on-point and really just the cherry on top of an already spectacular scene.
BOTTOM LINE: NOT MUCH HAPPENING, BUT STILL HAS INCREDIBLE MOMENTS
Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #2 pushes the story forward in interesting ways and is defined by its best moments. The problem is that there is more comic than just those few scenes. The stuff in between the three big moments lacks execution and feels like it’s just there to fill space. But this issue could be read for the spectacular artistic moments that happen throughout the issue. 4 out of 5 stars.
