    Question Of The Day

Major Spoilers Question of the Day: The Next Generation Edition

    Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonJuly 9, 2020Updated:July 9, 20204 Comments1 Min Read

When the new Star Trek film debuted in 2009, many dramatic predictions of doom by the fanbase followed.  For my part, I wasn’t particularly worried, having been through the first revival, with Star Trek: The Next Generation back in ’87.  In fact, in a climate where revamps, reboots, relaunches, launch-boots, reimaginings and what-have-you are the norm, I felt that Star Trek was more deserving of the treatment than, say, Jet Jaguar or Space Ranger.  In fact, I’d even go a step further and speculate on the next big revampticated sensation:  Breakin’ 3 – The Next Boogalation!  With some updated settings and some awesome street dancing, Ozone and Kelly’s kid can team up with a new generation to save more youth centers from the nefarious Shooter McGavin, leading to today’s pop-n-lock query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) reminds that there ain’t no stopping’ us, not even oncoming traffic or municipal laws, asking: What property, movie, cartoon or whatever is most deserving of a “Next Generation?”

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

It might be fun to see something new set in the Firefly universe.

I don’t think it’s possible to bring back the original show. It was lightning in a bottle and after this long, I think any attempt to bring back the original show would be a shadow of its former self…

So don’t try that. Do something entirely new with the franchise that might be different but just as good!

Maybe a 20-years-in-the-future kind of thing, where civil war has broken out again after years of unrest following the events of Serenity.

Maybe bring back one of the original cast who isn’t doing anything to be the leader of the new independents (My vote is River). They wouldn’t be the main character, perhaps not even a regular cast member, just a recurring guest character. The show might center around another crew of misfits caught between the warring sides and just trying to make their way in the ‘verse.

We already had Star Wars: TNG, Battlestar Galactica: TNG (twice).

Farscape: TNG. Only on Disney+, not a Comcast owned company.

Not sure about deserving, but Most of DC & Marvel heroes should actually change generations instead of retcon after retcon where WW2 guys are Vietnam guys are Iraq guys are Syria guys…
