The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
BLADE RUNNER 2019 #2
Writer: Michael Green, Mike Johnson
Artist: Andres Guinaldo
Publisher: Titan Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION
Return to the world of Blade Runner in an all-new ongoing comic series from the pen of Michael Green (screenwriter for Blade Runner 2049) and Mike Johnson (Star Trek), illustrated by Andres Guinaldo (Justice League Dark, Captain America)! Veteran Blade Runner Ash hunts down the kidnapped child of a billionaire, but he’s not all he seems…
STACY: A great issue which expands on the world of Blade Runner, this is really already better, in my opinion, than the more recent big screen offering!
CANTO #3
Writer: David M. Booher
Artist: Drew Zucker
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Into the belly of the beast! Canto consults with the Hermit and learns the surprising truth about the slavers. Canto’s path is now laid out before him, but is he prepared to face a foe known only as the Shrouded Man?
CHRISTOPHER: This is a beautifully told story that has a captivating cover. I’ll be seeing what our small protagonist does this issue.
INGRID: Canto is a little gem of a book that has some loose ties to the Wizard of Oz. We’re following the story of Canto, a little tin man whose people are enslaved and whose hearts have been stolen and replaced with clockwork. He’s on a hero’s journey through an imaginative world full of surprising characters, and it is well worth a read.
MARVEL TALES: X-MEN #1
Writer: Chris Claremon, Jo Duffy, Roy Thomas
Artist: Neal Adams, Kerry Gammill, Jim Lee
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $7.99
SOLICITATION: The X-Men join the celebration of the House of Ideas’ 80th anniversary with the latest issue of the era-spanning MARVEL TALES! This anthology shines a spotlight on fan-favorite characters, features timeless stories and highlights some of Marvel’s most impressive talent from the past eight decades. First, Alex Summers suits up as the man called Havok in X-MEN (1963) #58 — a classic tale of the original X-Men by the legendary team of Roy Thomas and Neal Adams! Then, New Mutants’ Sunspot and Warlock join a ragtag group of teen heroes — plus the mutant lobsters known as Bill and Don — in FALLEN ANGELS #2 by classic creators Jo Duffy and Kerry Gammill! And finally, Storm powerfully reasserts herself as the captured X-Men face execution in Genosha in UNCANNY X-MEN (1981) #272 by the superstar team of Chris Claremont and Jim Lee!
CHRISTOPHER: My parents love the X-men and told me stories of the older comics. Being somewhat young, this looks like a great opportunity to read some of these older stories myself.
OUTPOST ZERO #12
Writer: Sean Kelley McKeever
Artist: Alexandre Tefenkgi
Publisher: Image Comics, Inc.
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Citizens of the Outpost work so hard just to stay alive, but what are they surviving for? If Alea’s plans work out, they might have a new future in mind…
INGRID: Outpost Zero is a fascinating sci-fi series that juxtaposes trying to grow up with a normal life against living in precarious conditions. The tension has been building slowly as we learn how little the people of the Outpost know – not only about the world they’re trying to survive on, but even about their own ship and the underpinnings of their little settlement.
PRETTY VIOLENT #1
Writer: Derek Hunter, Jason Young
Artist: Derek Hunter
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Gamma Rae wants to be a superhero, and why shouldn’t she!? She’s been strong since she was a baby. The only problem is, all her siblings are notorious hero-murdering criminals! Join artist DEREK HUNTER (DuckTales, Adventure Time), and writer JASON YOUNG (I HATE FAIRYLAND) for this all-new ongoing, gore-filled, laugh-out-loud comedy for mature readers that explores one girl’s journey through the rift between personal and family identity.
MATTHEW: This looks like a wild ride that could be a lot of fun, even if I’m leery of a book that looks like it’s bright and colorful for young readers, but is in fact full of violence and swears.
SUPERMAN’S PAL JIMMY OLSEN #2
Writer: Matt Fraction
Art: Steve Lieber
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Only Jimmy Olsen knows what Superman’s secret superpowers truly are-and now those mysteries will finally be shared with you! And only you. Don’t tell anyone. And Jimmy won’t have any of his pal’s super-abilities to help him get out of his latest jam as he hits the dark and dirty streets of Gotham City!
JONATHAN: Okay, so I’m not really sure what’s going on in this series, but it sure is intriguing and I really want to know more. Besides all that though, I can really appreciate how this book feels like both a comedic send up and loving homage to some of the sillier parts of The Silver Age at the same time.
STEPHEN: Zany? Wacky? Absurd? Fun? Why not all of the above!? Loving everything coming from this series.
TEEN TITANS #33
Writer: Adam Glass
Artist: Sean Chen
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION
In the wake of the Terminus Agenda and Crush’s first encounter with Lobo, the Teen Titans begin again at Mercy Hall with a new mission and a new lease on life. But just when they catch their first break in ages in their hunt for the Other, Robin confirms that the person who let his prisoners escape…was one of his teammates. As Robin’s hunt for the mole begins, Lobo accepts a gift from Lex Luthor…and an unholy alliance is born!
STACY: Despite a completely irrelevant cover which does not pertain to the story at all, this is a great issue. The Teen Titans are coming up from their worst conflict, and it seems that some of them have not learned from their past mistakes.
STRAYED #1
Writer: Carlos Giffoni
Artist: Juan Doe
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: In the far future, a military-industrial complex reigns over all humanity and actively destroys distant alien worlds. The galaxy’s only hope can be found through an unlikely pair: an astral-projecting cat named Lou and his loving owner Kiara. Trading nine lives for the well-being of billions, their revolt is a battle for love, friendship, compassion, and the soul of humanity.
MATTHEW: Something about that premise seems like it could be fascinating, so I’m very interested to give this book a look.
VALKYRIE: JANE FOSTER #1
Writer: Jason Aaron, Al Ewing
Artist: CAFU
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: INTRODUCING THE GOD OF THE KILL – BULLSEYE!
The deadliest shot in the Marvel Universe just got his hands on the sword of a god! With the Asgardian weapon Dragonfang, Bullseye has the power to kill a god in a single stroke – and he’s about to prove it. Jane Foster, the newly christened Valkyrie, must learn a hard lesson: Not every death can be prevented. Who is next on Bullseye’s list – and what is the assassin really after?
MATTHEW: I’m irritated that I missed issue #1, but I’m really wanting to see Jane Foster’s new adventures, even with that idiot Bullseye involved.
