If you were wondering if people still desire unopened trading card packs, the answer is most definitely, yes. A recent Heritage Auction auctioned off unopened Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon sets, and the Black Lotus card even made to the auction block.
The auction offered 12 Pokémon lots and 25 MTG lots, which sold for a combined $294,858 in Heritage Auctions’ Comics & Comic Art Auction Feb. 21-23. Bidders were determined to own the Pokémon First Edition Base Set, containing 36 unopened packs, each with 11 cards, and paid $28,000 more than the set’s $50,000 pre-auction estimate.
In addition to these unopened sets, Magic: The Gathering Beta Edition Black Lotus BGS 9 brought in $26,400.
The Pokemon set ended up going for $78,000, which made it the most expensive game item on the auction. Combined with all of the MTG cards, trading card portion of Heritage Auctions event came close to $300,000.
