Did You Hear? is a weekly examination of headlines in the entertainment industry and a take on what they could mean for the future of the industry and (often), the little geeky bubble that we occupy.
Superman No More?
You knew this was going to take up a lot of this week’s article, so let’s hop right into the Superman story!
Warners Bros. broke the internet on Wednesday by apparently intimated that Henry Cavill was done with the role of Superman. The Hollywood Reporter put the story out and Deadline released their own follow-up minutes after the original article hit the news cycle. Amidst these strange statements, one thing was definitely confirmed: Henry Cavill’s Superman will not be appearing in WB’s upcoming Shazam! movie. Fans were immediately disappointed due to the popular fan theory that Billy Batson was one of the two children interviewing Superman for their podcast at the beginning of the Justice League movie.
In addition to his absence from Shazam! WB has confirmed that they have no active plans for Cavill’s Superman. While it could be read that some people inside WB are not doing their jobs with the greatest aplomb, Cavill’s manager Dany Garcia was right on top of this story with her client’s best interests in mind and Tweeted the following statement:
Dany Garcia on Twitter: “Be peaceful, the cape is still in his closet. @wbpictures has been and continues to be our partners as they evolve the DC Universe. Anticipate a WB statement later today. / Twitter”
Be peaceful, the cape is still in his closet. @wbpictures has been and continues to be our partners as they evolve the DC Universe. Anticipate a WB statement later today.
This was followed by Cavill’s own cryptic response on his personal Instagram:

The above mentioned articles have been evolving since they were published with a “WB studio source” coming out with updates:
Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors.
A WB spokesperson put out an official statement early Thursday morning:
While no decisions have been made regarding any upcoming Superman films, we’ve always had great respect for and a great relationship with Henry Cavill, and that remains unchanged.
We have a great relationship and great respect for Henry Cavill that continues to remain unchanged. Additionally we have made no current decisions regarding any upcoming Superman films.
There’s a recognition that some parts of the previous movies didn’t work.
What this ultimately boils down to is a non-story, unfortunately. There might be a kernel of truth buried in here, but with the lack of confirmation is messy. DC Films had a big regime change in the past year and there’s a good chance we are about to see a big upheaval in the schedule and that many of the projects that aren’t in active development could be scrapped. However, if the case is that WB is no longer considering Cavill to be part of their cinematic plans then this messy press release is an incredibly disrespectful way for it to play.
Sabrina the Teenage Trailer
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina | Teaser: Happy Birthday | Netflix
A witch’s 16th birthday is very special. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina tells the story of Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka), a half-witch half-mortal tee…
The debut trailer for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is here! It’s as dark as the original Archie Comic character. The show is set to drop on Netflix October 26, 2018.
The series stars: Kiernan Shipka (Sabrina Spellman), Lucy Davis (Hilda Spellman), Miranda Otto (Zelda Spellman), Ross Lynch (Harvey Kinkle), Michelle Wardell aka Madame Satan (Mary Wardell). It is produced by the team behind Archie’s hit show Riverdale.
The trailer includes Easter Eggs and iconography that is familiar to fans familiar with the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic book series – including an amazing cameo by Salem right there at the end. I don’t have a lot of insightful commentary to offer on this trailer, but I did want to tack my enduring excitement for the series onto the end of this piece today!
