Major Spoilers Question of the Day: Sequels You Wanted Edition

Matthew PetersonBy Matthew PetersonSeptember 14, 20185 Comments1 Min Read

Some days, I really feel a sense of existential sadness that ‘Buckaroo Banzai Vs. The World Crime League’ never got made into a film.  I understand that the film was decades ahead of 1984, but part of me really wanted to see it and even the idea of Kevin Smith’s proposed Buckaroo TV series doesn’t dull the feeling for me.  The list of Sequels You Wanted is a long one for me, though, ranging from ‘Metropolis’ to ‘Serenity’ to ‘ Multiplicity’ with Michael Keaton.  Sequels may sometimes be disappointing, but a film like ‘The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension’ has to be high on the list of any aficionado, leading to today’s Lectroid query…

The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) also really wanted to know what happened on the other side of ‘The Black Hole’, asking: Which non-existent second installation is top of the list of Sequels You Wanted?

Once upon a time, there was a young nerd from the Midwest, who loved Matter-Eater Lad and the McKenzie Brothers... If pop culture were a maze, Matthew would be the Minotaur at its center. Were it a mall, he'd be the Food Court. Were it a parking lot, he’d be the distant Cart Corral where the weird kids gather to smoke, but that’s not important right now... Matthew enjoys body surfing (so long as the bodies are fresh), writing in the third person, and dark-eyed women. Amongst his weaponry are such diverse elements as: Fear! Surprise! Ruthless efficiency! An almost fanatical devotion to pop culture! And a nice red uniform.

Oh man, that story goes in a completely different direction than in the way the movie ends… that sequel would have a lot of people scratching their heads.

Most of the time I just want 5 more minutes added to the end of the movie. For example, on Cast Away, which way does Chuck go?
I was a member of the Buckaroo Banzai fan club that was pushing for a sequel. Obviously, that never happened.
For years, I had been hoping for a sequel to Last Starfighter; it is inching out of Development Hell.

The Rocketteer should really have spawned an unstoppable multimedia franchise and sequels galore

        Yes. Yes, it should have.
