It’s always fun when your kids share your interests. Lately, my kid has had a thing for a scary movie, specifically the ‘Final Destination’ series, which has made for some wonderful bonding time for us, as her mother won’t even be in the room when those things are on. As we have watched various twenty-somethings-pretending-to-be-teens get squished, slashed, burned and trisected by an explosion-propelled barbed wire fence, two things have become clear: Visual effects have come a long way in the last 20 years and my kid likes to scream “THAT’S SICK, Y’ALL!” I’m unclear as to whether “sick” means “gross” or “awesome”, but either way, I’m on the hook for the price of therapy, leading to today’s doomed query…
The MS-QOTD (pronounced, as always, “misquoted”) hasn’t yet gotten to the escalator scene in part four, which is a gory enough moment to shake even this old-school Romero fan, asking: What’s your favorite scary movie, Sidne– Err, Spoilerites?

Evil Dead ties with Halloween.
I like my horror with a dash of humor, so I prefer things along the lines of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, “Army of Darkness” or “Bride of Chucky”. I also like the “WHAT THE (expletive)?!?!”-ness of many Japanese horror films that make you wonder if you really just saw that or if someone spiked your drink with something causing you to hallucinate.
But I think my absolute favorite is probably the original Evil Dead. The low-budget effects actually give it a little more of a creepy feel than many higher budget horror films.
I am a big fan of 13 ghosts. The make-up is great and , if you got the Dvd, the backstory to each ghost is equal parts intriguing and brutal. And who can be the spooky comedic timing of psychic shaggy after he goes to a punk concert?
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) was so scary that I couldn’t walk down the hallway without turning on the light. And Friday the 13th (1980) was by far the best and scariest of that franchise. However, I am about to be 47 in June of this year, and, even though I know what is going to happen throughout the entire movie, Alien (1979) will still freak me out and I love watching it! I don’t know if I am remembering how scary it was to see it as a kid or what, but it still thrills me to this day when I watch it!
