IT’S NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! #NCBD
The best day of the week just got a lot better with a new round of awesome comics arriving in stores this week. Staff members at Major Spoilers are here to help you with your comic book selection this week, with their roundup of comics they recommend.
THE ARCHIES ONE-SHOT
Writers: Alex Segura and Matt Rosenberg
Artists: Joe Eisma, Matt Herms, Jack Morelli
Publisher: Archie Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: Follow Archie’s quest to make his songwriting dreams a reality, and see what happens when the rock ‘n’ roll dream starts affecting his relationships with his closest friends. Join co-writers Alex Segura and Matthew Rosenberg (Archie Meets Ramones) and artist Joe Eisma (Archie) for a power-pop one-shot that goes loud on the music, fun and friendship.
STEPHEN: Archie has been in the public eye a lot lately, and for those coming off the season finale of Riverdale, this might be a great way to get in on everything you need to know about the comic book team. The one-shot is written by Alex Segura, an excellent crime writer, but don’t expect to see too much death and destruction in this issue.
DOC SAVAGE: RING OF FIRE #3
Writer: David Avallone
Artist: Dave Acosta
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: The Man of Bronze meets Amelia Earhart, just like we promised. She’s in the clutches of John Sunlight – Savage’s dark mirror, a madman with an apocalyptic plan and the deadly means to pull it off. The South Pacific is boiling over, in the penultimate chapter of Avallone and Acosta’s DOC SAVAGE: RING OF FIRE. As an added bonus, the Brent Schoonover covers for issues 1-4 will connect to form 1 complete image!
STEPHEN: This is one of the best Doc Savage series I’ve read in recent times, and I highly recommend this issue for those that have a love for classic Doc Savage Tales.
I AM GROOT #1
Writer: Christopher Hastings
Artist: Flaviano
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: When the Guardians of the Galaxy get caught in a wormhole, a smaller-than-normal Groot is separated billions of light-years away from the team. Falling to a planet below, Groot discovers he is on an entirely alien and unknown world full of strange creatures and societies. Seriously underdeveloped and with nobody who can understand him, Groot will need to make the journey to the center of this world and find the way back to his family!
MATTHEW: I am Groot! I am Groot, I am Groot? I, am Groot, am Groot.
I am Groot.
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #7
Writer: Steve Orlando
Artist: Jamal Campbell
Publisher: DC Comics
Cover Price: $3.99
SOLICITATION: Batman and Xenos work on the Secret Sanctuary while the Ray and Vixen perform community outreach. But it’s not all fun and games for DC’s newest superhero team, as the Atom and Killer Frost face off against the Terrorsmith (and their own budding romance) while Lobo and Black Canary come to blows in a casino caper. And it’s all capped off with a moment fans have been waiting for since DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH!
MATTHEW: Orlando’s League is a winner, the writing is strong, they use DC history in ways that surprise even me and, best of all? It’s not the same old Big Seven Everything Explodes loop JLA has been in since about 2007. Good stuff…
SUN BAKERY #3
Writer: Corey Lewis
Artist: Corey Lewis
Publisher: Image Comics
Cover Price: $4.99
SOLICITATION: The one-man action anthology continues in SUN BAKERY #3! The swashbuckling story of sword-wielding Xasha continues in DREAM SKILLS, the ethereal skate quest of BAT RIDER rides on, and a new story about a guy who can summon anything from his magical LAYERED JACKET enters the fray. SUN BAKERY continues its tradition of ushering in the most wild stories in comics!
MATTHEW: I love a good anthology, and this solo creator anthology is a good one. There’s tons of energy, a lovely independent comics vibe, and best of all? It’s fascinating to look at…
