It should come as no surprise that James Gunn has been hired by Marvel Studios to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Gunn made the announcement on his Facebook page, just ahead of the early showing of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for certain people – none of whom were me.
“So, after many months of ruminations and discussions, I know the answer. I could save this answer for the first, random interviewer to ask me during the press junket but instead I thought I’d share it with the most important people in the Guardiansverse – you, the fans, who have been so incredibly supportive and enthusiastic over the past five years, it has moved me to tears on a regular basis,” he wrote. “So, yes, I’m returning to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”
Really, is this a surprise to anyone? Guardians of the Galaxy blew everyone away, and early reports from those who have seen GotG Vol. 2 (who are not me, by the way) have had nothing but super positive things to say about the movie. And, when you have a monster on the loose in the movie theater, and the movie industry is dead set on a three-movie franchise for everything, this announcement comes off as a bit of a no-brainer.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 arrives on May 5, at which point I may get to see the movie…
